We join with our Mother Church today in celebrating the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Generally, we celebrate the day of saint’s death as his or her feast. The reason is that day marks his or her entrance into heaven. To this rule there are two notable exceptions: the birth days of Blessed Virgin Mary and of St. John the Baptist. The reason is all the others are born into this world with original sin. But these two people were free from the original sin. As we know Virgin Mary because she would be the mother of Jesus God kept her free from original sin. It is said however, John was cleansed of the original sin in the womb of his mother. This is the justification for today’s feast.
The Church celebrates the nativity of John the Baptist for two reasons: First, Because He is the frontier between the Old and New Testaments. In other words, he was the forerunner of Jesus Christ. He grew up in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel. He lived an austere life and preached in the wilderness saying: Repent, turn away from your sins and prepare the way of the Lord. Secondly, he is the greatest among those born of women. He was born when his parents were very old. Humanly speaking it was impossible for them to have a child. We can say he was a special gift of God not only to his parents but to the whole of humanity. (Lk 1:36-37) John is not a figure that we can forget now that Jesus, the true light has appeared. John was, he is and he will be always relevant because he calls for a true preparation (repentance) which all people need to make. Message from His Holiness Pope Francis
for the 104 the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2018 Dear brothers and sisters, today the universal Church observes the 104th “World Day of Migrants and Refugees.” On this occasion His Holiness Pope Francis has sent his reflection for us to read and reflect and act on it. Here is the summary of what he says. If you look at his life as Pope we find grate love and compassion towards the poor and homeless, migrants and refugees. Throughout of his Pontificate, time and again he has expressed his concern for the lamentable situation of many migrants and refugees fleeing from war, persecution, natural disasters and poverty. He invites all of us to share and express as church our care and concern for migrants, displaced people, refugees and victims of all types of inhuman activities that are taking place in our planet. I too agree with Pope Francis that this solidarity must be concretely expressed at every stage of the migratory experience- from departure through journey to arrival and return. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will, who are called to respond to the challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities. He articulates our common responds: “to welcome, to protect, to promote and to integrate.” Finally, Pope goes on explaining the meaning of these four articulated verbs mentioned above. You can read it on the Website www.the latest massage of Pope Francis on migrants and refugees. Let us join with His Holiness Pope Francis in this grate project of noble cause. Many refugees have settled in a refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar. Though the Rohingya are now safe from persecution and being supported by organisations on the ground, they are now faced with the risk of flooding from monsoon rains. Heavy rain and high-winds may destroy shelters, create landslides and pose health risks. Caritas is working with Caritas Bangladesh and others to build retainer walls, stronger shelters and to meet the needs of the Rohingya people. As Pope Francis said, “embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands.” The Rohingya are an example of his message. Caritas invites you to stand in solidarity with the Rohingya by supporting our emergency appeal. Right now, each donation is doubled (up to $250,000) by the New Zealand Aid Programme. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially John Rogers and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. This weekend our readings present three main topics for our reflection: The nakedness of Adam; the sin against the Holy Spirit and the question about Jesus’ family (who are my family?) Though these three points do not appear to be related; they are if we consider these readings from the viewpoint of sincerity and our faith. Adam tells God that he hid because he was naked. This really is not about nudity; but this is about being exposed before God. Adam was revealed as proud. He wanted to be like God. His desires were more important than god’s will. He was disobedient. Adam’s nakedness was even further revealed. It is sad, but we can look into the depths of Adam’s nakedness and see our own refusal to submit to God’s will as well as our own rationalization for anything we do wrong. (not owning our own sins).
What is the Sin against the Holy Spirit? The Scribes accused Jesus’ good work as coming from the evil. So, “refusing to see the holiness of God is the sin against the Holy Spirit. The Scribes claimed to be Spiritual but they were not. If there was anything spiritual at all, they would at least have recognized some form of goodness in Jesus’ work. At the end of our Gospel reading we find Jesus was not afraid to expose who he was. Jesus was the Son of God. It was, therefore, his primary duty to do the will of God and not that of his family. The spiritual family is more important than the biological family. That is why Jesus says that all those who do the will of God are his family. This is what we Christians are called to do. We can become his mother, brother and sister only by doing the will of his heavenly Father. It is a fascinating insight into how the organ came to be built and the thought and ingenuity which was behind its construction. At 8pm, Chris Hainsworth, a former pupil of Maxwell Fernie and currently the titulaire at Béziers Cathedral, will give a recital of French music selected to demonstrate the versatility of the instrument. You are very welcome to attend this important event. We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently and those whose anniversaries occur around this time including Hannah Standish, Pat Reynolds and Brendan Murray. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially John Rogers, Graeme Adams and Steve Kuzmicich and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. Last Sunday we celebrated the feat of the most Holy Trinity, we thanked and praised our Triune God. Among the many saving deeds of the Trinitarian God that lead us to salvation, there is one which is called God’s wisdom, power and love namely: Eucharist. It was this display of God’s love that moved the Church to establish the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. This weekend the Catholic Church all over the World celebrates the feast of that Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is also commonly known as the feast of Corpus Christi. This feast is established as a memorial of God’s everlasting presence in the Church. The night before he died, as he sat at table with his disciples, he took bread and said, ‘this is my body given for you.’ Then he took the cup filled with wine and said, ‘take this is the cup of my blood and drink. Do this in memory of me.’ In this way in his love for them he left them a special way of remembering him, namely the Eucharist. Since then it is believed and still we believe with great strength, that Jesus is truly present in the form of consecrated bread and wine. When we remember him in this way, he becomes present to us.
Here there is another aspect of reality of this feast, which we are often not aware of it. When we receive the Holy Communion, we usually say ‘Amen’ that means we are affirming the reality of the body and blood of Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Another reality we affirm is that we, the gathered followers of Jesus Christ are the body of Christ. That is why St. Paul in his letters to the 1st Cor.12 versus 28 says; “Now you are Christ’s body and individually parts of it.” Let our prayer today be Lord strengthen the bonds that unite us with you and one another, so that we may enjoy the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live forever and ever. Fr Gregory Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Please donate a pair of new flannelette pyjamas or make a monetary donation. Warm kids are healthy kids. Help Hospi keep our kids warm this winter! Wellington Hospitals Foundation is calling for brand new pyjamas for sick children both in Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital, and out in our community. Why? Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital sees a significant increase in the number of children who are admitted to hospital over the winter months, and many of them come without a pair of pyjamas. For many Wellington families in need, the simple act of having warm pyjamas and heating their home is more than they can afford. A warm pair of pyjamas, to keep our children warm at night, can help prevent them from being admitted to hospital this winter. How? All donated pyjamas must be brand new. Size 2-10, flannelette 2 piece pyjamas preferred. Pyjamas can be dropped off to the Receptions at: Wellington Hospital, or posted to: Wellington Hospitals Foundation, Wellington Hospital Private Bag 7902, Wellington 6242, New Zealand. To make an online donation whf.org.nz/donate and Hospi will buy a pair on your behalf! In the Eucharist the Lord makes us walk on his road, that of service, of sharing, of giving; and if it is shared, that little we have, that little we are, becomes riches, for the power of God — which is the power of love — comes down into our poverty to transform it. So let us ask ourselves, in adoring Christ who is really present in the Eucharist: do I let myself be transformed by him? Do I let the Lord who gives himself to me, guide me to going out ever more from my little enclosure, in order to give, to share, to love him and others?
