Jer 31, 7-9; Heb 5, 1-6; Mk 10, 46-52

Dear brothers and sisters, it is spring time, the flowers, new shoots from the trees proclaiming the glory of God and giving us hope that the good days are ahead.  Readings too bring us message of vibrant hope of seeing Christ and encountering him. As Jesus and the huge crow following him began to leave Jericho, Bartimaeus, a blind man, sat by the side of the road begging.  In a moment that would change his life, by calling “Son of David, have pity on me.”
The crowd was probably uncomfortable by the loudness of the blind beggar’s request, seeing him as an embarrassment and a distraction.  They tried to hush him.  But Bartimaeus, who now had hope burning in his heart, would not be silenced.  “Son of David!” he yelled again loudly.  “Have pity on me!” Jesus asked disciples to call Bartimaeus over to him.  And rest of them is a history.
I pause as I face my own daily blindness and wonder if I really want to ask Jesus to see.  Do I want to be healed?  I see families in division, government policies that hurt the poor, refugees that beg an unwilling world for help and people betrayed by their own church.  If I see all this clearly, then what will I have to do? If I see where I can make a difference, what new challenges does that put in my life?
Jesus standing in front of me, loving me and asking, “What do you want me to do for you?”
And then I know that I want Jesus to give me sight and take my hand and lead me.  I have the words now: “Lord, I want to see.”                                                                                                   Fr Ephrem

We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington,
drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples.

October is the month of the Rosary.
All parishioners are invited to pray the rosary till the end of the month.

November is a special month in which we are encouraged to pray for the dead
  • A plenary indulgence may be gained for the dead, once only, by visiting a church on 2 November and praying the Lord’s prayer and the Creed.

Three conditions are required for the gaining of the indulgence:
  • Sacramental confession
  • Holy Communion
  • Prayer for the Pope’s intentions

NOVEMBER PRAYERS FOR THE DEAD:  As November is the traditional month for special prayers for our loved ones, parishioners are asked to write the names and place them in the box in the Church or give them to the priest.  Envelopes are available in the foyer. Because of the large number of names, we will only print anniversaries or recent.   All names will be remembered in Masses offered during November.

MISSIO-NZ accepts Mass Intentions to pray for the living and the deceased.
The custom of requesting a priest to offer Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be present at Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church.
Together with the Mass Intention Request, the faithful generally make an offering, called a stipend, to
the priest in order to apply the Mass to a specific intention, such as an anniversary or a birthday or for a deceased beloved one. By making this offering   the   faithful, by parting with something that is their own, associate themselves more intimately with Christ. The offering of a stipend is also a means whereby Catholics may contribute to the upkeep of the clergy.
Many priests in Africa and Asia depend entirely on Mass stipends for their income. Many Dioceses do not have any priest-funds for their clergy. A Mass Stipend of $10.00 is suggested. Please help them by sending your Mass intentions to MISSIO-NZ and our office will pass them on to a priest in a mission territory overseas. Our office sends these Mass Intentions to the National Director of MISSIO (Pontifical Mission Societies) of the country who in turn distributes it to priests who need most the help.

  • deep Fryers – If anyone has any deep fryers we can borrow on the day.

Mission Sunday
Is 53, 10-11; Heb 4, 14-16; Mk 10, 35-45

“Pope Francis has called every man and woman to be a part of mission. In his World Mission Day message, he speaks especially to the youth to take a active role in mission k however also reminds us that mission revitalises faith and that all Christians are called to mission as we are children of God.” – missonz
Jesus in the gospel of Mark Chapter 10 teaches the very important lesson, the only lesson requires is to be missionary disciples of Jesus in service, contrary to the rulers of the world. Though James and John they were cheeky and brazen, Jesus sieges the opportunity to teach them in a manner, becomes the teaching for their life. We too time and again though baptised into the discipleship of Jesus think as these two apostles did. This mission, the sense of service drilled in their heart as never to be forgotten, in fact they realised, that is the mission they are called to live by their word and deeds. God calls us to share the gifts freely received freely (cf. Mt 10,8) and as Peter did (Acts 3,6).
“Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that nobody needs you. Many people need you. Think about it! Each of you, think in your heart: many people need me” – Missionz, from ‘meeting with Young People, Maipu Shrine, 17 January 2018.’

Am I closed in on myself, on my possessions, or am I aware of those in need of help? Do I only serve myself or am I able to serve others, like Christ who came to serve even to the point of giving up his life?           Pope Francis: Address at the Jesuit Refugee Centre in Rome, 2013

Day of Prayer to Respect Life
Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy, Ps 90
There is certain realisation within me that God is God and I am just a creature. God calls me to love completely unselfish, unwavering, unconditional which I fall awfully short of. I face with challenges beyond me to be wholly generous. I feel weak and want to retain control of “my” world, family, home, selfishly guarding, as if they were mine.
If Christ were to ask me the same question he asked to the rich man in the parable today, to sell all of my possessions to follow him, I might be on a good day? It requires me turning away from my physical, intellectual, emotional and ego to wholly serve my God. The rich man wanted to so too I but the baggage I struggle to part and in love with. I do someway understand God’s unconditional love as a mother loves her child.
So dear friends, I crawl through the eye of the needle along with my friend, the camel. Despite my deep failure to love generously, the Truth is that God understands and loves me and he provides his love to me and makes me capable. I am so grateful for this that what I can least do is to strive. I can live in community, in solidarity, to the best of my ability, the gifts that God has provided. I can create a safe community life empowered by God’s love. I can work to ensure that the resource that God first entrusted to all of us “Our Common Home” Pope Francis says. It is here that we grow in respect, love for all life that exist.
My effort may fall short, only I need to do is to choose to believe in striving to fulfilling Jesus’ call.

Poem for Respect for Life Sunday
Cradlings
When I asked God how I could hold my empty arms
and carry what isn’t there,
this is what he said: Rest.
Rest and let me remember you.
I loved you then and I love you now.
I made you full and whole.
I made you laughter and noise,
busy and quiet.
But most of all
I made you holy
and I named you “My Love”.

Rest, My Love and let your arms be filled;
I am ‘The Gentlest of Cradlings’.

Sunday 14 October is the day that Oscar Romero will be canonised, and the Gospel reading (Mark 10:17-20) talks about the kingdom of God, including what we give up for it and what we hope for.  It feels a very appropriate day to include a quote from Oscar Romero’s final homily, delivered just before he was assassinated while celebrating Mass.
God's reign is already present on our earth in mystery. When the Lord comes, it will be brought to perfection. That is the hope that inspires Christians. We know that every effort to better society, especially when injustice and sin are so ingrained, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us! Archbishop Romero March 24, 1980 in the homily delivered moments before his death

Gen 2, 18-24; Heb 2, 9-11 and Mark 10, 2-16
“Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.”
Dear sisters and brothers, at the time of Jesus most of the marriages were arranged, divorce was common despite the clear divine design espoused by Scripture. Human weakness and failure cannot out do the divine design. The Lord is consistent in inviting us to aim high and set on that journey step by step, as sea is made drop by drop of rain, we travel miles walking single step at a time.
Nobody said marriage will be a happily lived after. God lowers himself than angels and lives like one of us. The reason is simply, God loves us unconditionally. This is what make his Son Jesus lower than angels. You and me and specially those who are married, love your wife unconditionally and wife love your husband unconditionally. Do not allow your love to die. It dies when you focus on other things than your wife and husband. They take away your hearts and mind from and kills your love for one another. Let your spouse be your first priority. That is why spouses leave their parents and everyone to become one.
The purpose of Jesus coming into this world is to bring us, His children into His glory. May this Eucharist celebration create a moment of encountering Jesus Christ and help us our priority sorted out. This is a moment of Holiness for us all.
“We are inspired to act … to proclamation and to serving others with great fidelity, often at the risk of their lives and certainly at the cost of their comfort.” GE 137                                                                                                                                                                                                               Fr Ephrem

The annual Suzanne Aubert Celebration Sunday is a day for all Catholics to celebrate and remember the spirituality and good works of this remarkable woman and to be inspired by what she achieved and to follow in her footsteps. At the age of just 25, Suzanne Aubert arrived in New Zealand from France, to answer God’s call to serve the sick, orphaned, elderly and those whom society rejected. She established New Zealand’s first soup kitchen which still serves thousands of meals a year. She was a pioneer of New Zealand’s health and welfare system and a friend to Māori throughout her life. In the 66 years she lived here, Suzanne travelled widely, visiting more than 24 towns across the country. A special pilgrimage map can be viewed on the website (www.suzanneaubert.co.nz) which has been designed to help those interested to retrace Suzanne’s footsteps in Aotearoa. Suzanne’s wairua lives on in the work of the Sisters of Compassion. Please continue to pray that the church will soon recognize Venerable Suzanne Aubert’s intercession in a miracle which enables her to be beatified.

This is the prayer that will be prayed during the Mass for Mother Aubert.
Today as we remember the spirituality and good works of Venerable Suzanne Aubert, let us give thanks to God for this remarkable pioneer of faith and for the work that continues today through the Sisters of Compassion. May Mother Aubert’s life, befriending Māori and working among the neglected and marginalised in society, inspire in all of us a desire to live lives of faith, courage and service, and to see Christ in everyone we meet.  Amen.

Anniversaries for those who have died will no longer be included in the prayers of the faithful. The only names that will be included are those who have aksed the priest for a Mass intention.
The names will still be included in the newsletter as they currently are, but as the dead are remembered in every mass during the Eucharist prayer, will no longer be included in the prayers of the faithful.

From the home must come the man or woman able to promote the changes needed in politics, in society, in the ways of justice: … it will be so easy once boys and girls are trained in the heart of each family to aspire not to have more but to be more, not to grab everything but to give abundantly to others. They must be educated for love. Loving is what the family is all about, and loving means giving oneself, surrendering oneself to the well-being of all and working for the common happiness.
