Dear sisters and brothers, during this Advent season, we find ourselves journeying into God and the mysteries of the incarnation. Whole the stories may seem familiar as we encounter them each year, may we draw new life from these ancient texts, which continue to bear seeds of faith and hope for us. The first reading begins with Isaiah’s prophesy of Emmanuel – God with us. Theprophesy comes to Ahaz, a king in the midst of threats of warfare all around him god offers a sign to confirm that His help is all that Ahaz needs. His faith was tested. God’s promise is the ultimate form of security – God dwelling in amidst people. “Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.” In the gospel we see the obedience of faith being modelled in Joseph. He follows the advice of the angel in dream who said to him, not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, which he did. His fear could be rooted in consciousness of his own inadequacy to play this role in salvation history. God in his goodness, wishes to be with us and sends a message to us requesting: would you be Mary and Joseph? He wants to fulfilment his mission in you and me. Joseph acted wisely in such a crisis time in obedience to God. Can we act and move with God as we must? Let us acknowledge the call of God’s obedience and unfold His plan in us. By listening and discerning – often in silence and stillness, we are given the privilege of participating in the life of God which we are called, overcoming our fears through love that grows to displace Him Will you allow God to enter into your life and make him the king of Glory at this Christmas? Well, thanks to Almighty God first & then all of you my dear bro.& sisters I am keeping fine here. I am much better than what I was. My throat pain is still there but it is very mild. I am able to do all my work here. We are 25 of us in here in the community. And I am again made in charge of the community here. It is very tough & challenging at times to animate such big community. Due to these tensions my diabetes becomes bad. Secondly, it very cold these here. I am fine with the cold, but I feel very sorry for my other members, particularly for the candidates who are here with me. They do not have good warm cloths. Other side you be aware my country is burning. There is lot of political unrest going on. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. I miss you all very much here. Rest is ok. St. Vincent de Paul Society Seatoun & Miramar Conference says a big thank you to Holy Trinity Parish parishioners, to pupils, parents and staff of Holy Cross and St Anthony’s schools and St Patrick’s College, New World Miramar and Repco Lyall Bay, and Vinnies members. Your response to our appeal for groceries, treats and presents for our Christmas boxes delivered to those in most need, was overwhelming. Thanks again to New World Miramar who were extremely generous by donating vouchers for a range of groceries, toiletries and produce to place in the boxes. On Thursday, 19 December 2019 the Seatoun and Miramar members and friends of St. Vincent de Paul Society put together the boxes and hampers and on Friday, 20 December 2019, delivered them to 85 households for 338 people most in need of this extra help at this time of year. As communicated in the Newsletter of 8 December, a new timetable of Masses has been decided on for 2020. The new Sunday Mass timetable is an interim measure for the year, following news that our Capuchin community is leaving us (Father Paul in March 2020 and Father Ephrem in October 2020). The new timetable was considered by the Parish Pastoral Council, Liturgy and Finance Committees and then confirmed by the Parish Pastoral Council at its December meeting and approved by Cardinal John. Many are feeling vulnerable during this time of change in the Parish as we await the Cardinal’s decision on the property proposal and as we contemplate our future without the Capuchin community. Let us trust in the Lord.
The 2020 timetable was agreed upon to ensure one priest (Father Ephrem) has a sustainable workload for the year, to support the Church communities of the Parish through the opportunity of one Sunday Mass in each local Church, and to keep St Anthony’s available on Sunday mornings for the Aulotu community activities and Masses. The Sunday worship ministries roster will be updated to support the new timetable, and we request volunteers and those who update ministry rosters to update it from February 2020. Dear sisters and brothers, last Sunday we brought our awareness of God’s imminent coming among and within us. For this, we do not need to look beyond John the Baptist who came to bear witness to Jesus. Who do you consider bear witness to you of the gospel that God loves us: - a friend, a parent, a teacher, ...? Or to whom have we borne witness? John the Baptist had the courage to be himself in the face of opposition. He was also a person who knew his own value, did not make exaggerated claims and was content with his mission. Can you recall times when you have been content to be yourself, without pretending to be more than you are? What was it like to have that freedom, even in the face of criticism from others? John was ‘the voice of one crying out in the wilderness’ – announcing confidently to those in the wilderness that they must not despair because God’s grace may come to them at any moment. Have you had the experience of being in the wilderness, feeling lost? From whom did you hear a voice that gave you hope? Have been able to give hope to other people when they were in the wilderness? “Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” -Triona Doherty. You might even like to make up a whole hamper. On Friday 20 December 2019 our team of drivers and helpers will deliver the boxes of food and items to over 50 households in the district. A brief note for you suggesting ideas for donating items or making up hampers is available on the pews and in the foyer. This collection is a practical way we can reach out to bring Christ’s love to the homes of our neighbours who are really struggling and for whom this extra help will alleviate their burden. I am very aware that the process of preparing your proposals has not been easy, and that in some parishes it has been profoundly unsettling. You have had to deal with parishioners upset by the possibility of change, and I know this has taken a personal toll. You and the people have responded in your very different circumstances to Pope Francis’ call in Evangelii Gaudium (n 25): “I hope that all communities will devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are…Throughout the world, let us be permanently in a state of mission.” Between now and early February I will study and reflect upon the proposals. I may seek clarification or additional information from you during this time. My approach will be pastoral, looking at the possible effects on people of the changes being proposed. I will also look carefully at how one parish’s proposals might interact with those of neighbouring parishes, and the implications the proposals have together for the whole Archdiocese. In February and March I will consult with my advisory bodies about the proposals. These bodies are the Council of Priests, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, Te Kahu o te Rangi, and the Board of Administration. After Easter, which is in mid-April, I hope to be in a position to advise parishes of my response to the proposals, or to ask that further steps be taken, for example, discussion at regional levels in the Archdiocese. When I consider the proposals I will not be making a decision to “approve” them. My response to a proposal will be expressed as “no objection”, “further work needed” or “opposed”. It is the parish’s decision to actually proceed with a proposal if I have no objection. Once the parish decides to proceed, its decisions are subject to the Archdiocesan norms and approval processes. While the proposals were being worked on in parishes there has been a hold on property proposals being presented to or decided by the Board of Administration. This hold continues until I have made a response to all parishes and have notified you that the hold has been lifted. This hold includes property decisions which may already be in the early stages of the Board of Administration’s processes. We have not yet come through this difficult and unsettling process, but I would like everyone to now put aside differences and concerns and focus together on the great liturgical seasons and feasts of the next few months - Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. In doing this we have the opportunity to encounter Jesus and one another more deeply and be refreshed in our commitment to both community and mission. Please share this letter with the groups in your parishes which have been working on the property reviews, and with all parishioners if you wish.
