Today’s Gospel is a shocking one; at least it shocked the people of Christ’s time. What caused the shock was the fact that he went to stay with Zacchaeus the most hated man in the community. The public complained when they saw what was happening ; “ He has gone to stay with sinner’s house.” they said. Many are not happy even with our Pope Francis the way he is trying to bring reform in the house Catholic Church. They say he is too liberal and he is breaking the practice of the Sacraments of the church so on and so forth.
All God wants is that we give him half a chance. Zaachaeus the tax collector gave God little chance to see him and God understood what Zaachaeus wanted from Him that is forgiveness of his sins. We must learn to let God forgive us and make his home with us. Let us not do the things that make us popular, rather than what is right. We go where we feel most welcome, rather than where we are most needed. We befriend those who are kind to us, and ignore those who challenge us or those whom we don’t like. Jesus teaches us today to love saints and sinners equally. The goodness of God is greater than our evil. Click here to eEvery year we celebrate the “Mission Sunday” on the penultimate Sunday (next to last) in the month of October. By our faith and baptism every baptise person is a missionary. It is the duty and responsibility of every faithful Christian today, therefore, to continue the mission of our Jesus Christ. As we acknowledge our duty and responsibility, we feel more urge to share in the responsibility of the Mission of the Church.Though we want to participate in all the activities of the Church it is simply not possible. What we can do here is that we can support the Missionary activities of the Church through our prayers and donations. Let us be generous, as usual, in supporting the missionary works of the Church though our generous donations and prayers. Whatever we give on the Mission Sunday goes to the missionary activities of the mother Church. “God loves a cheerful giver.” Fr Gregory
Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY We celebrate the 90th World Mission Sunday this weekend. It was first introduced by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and has commissioned the Pontifical Mission Societies in each country to help coordinate its celebration. It is a day to gratefully thank God for having us as partners in mission. God’s Mission is Our Mission. To live well our life, bringing out the best in us so that those in contact with us experience goodness. This is the first step in participating in God’s Mission. St Irenaeus expressed it well, “The glory of God is the human person fully alive”. And the prayer is not only of gratitude, but of mercy and compassion so that our finite being may be enriched by the infinite goodness of God. Our Gospel reading this weekend exemplifies this reality. Two men went to the Temple to pray, and their prayers made the difference. The Pharisee who considered himself perfect, prayed to himself and his invocation left him vain. The Tax Collector prayed to God, became conscious of his poverty, and perceived God’s mercy. Therefore, Jesus in the end said “He left justified”. One is redeemed when one can sincerely acknowledge that all goodness achieved comes from the grace of God. We are his partners in mission. A true reason to be grateful. World Mission Sunday is also a day to focus on the Mission of the Church beyond our local situations and reach out. Surely, all may feel the pinch of economic constraints these days. But as believers we treasure our capacity to give from our poverty. Our First Reading this weekend offers comfort. “The Lord is a God of justice who knows no favorite…. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal…” The story of Little Maly from Cambodia in the short video prepared for this World Mission Sunday speaks of a simple heart who sees hope because of the efforts of the missionary Church. The simple presence and efforts of Sr Eulie, a missionary in Cambodia, make Little Maly smile, and dream not for herself but for her little sister. Where the story of Little Maly and of Sr Eulie are repeated millions of times, that is where the Missionary Church becomes the Witness of Mercy. Pope Francis proclaims this in his Mission Sunday Message. For 90 years now, all collections on Mission Sunday is given to the Universal Fund of the Church for its Missionary Activities especially in the young and needy dioceses around the world. Please give generously from your heart this World Mission Sunday. Fr Matthew Clerkin’s Golden Julbilee. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us about the role that perseverance plays in our spiritual life. Persistent here means pray unceasingly or persistent in prayer means to stick with it even if it is difficult. We all know that pray unceasingly is one of the hardest jobs to do. It is okay to pray for some time but to pray unceasingly is difficult. But if we want to be the followers of Jesus then that is the way. Jesus says, “If you want to be my disciple take up your cross and follow me.” Isralites win the battle at Rephidim because of the persistent prayers of Moses, Aaron and Hur. The widow wins the justice because of her perseverance in asking for the justice. Jesus himself spent lot of times in prayer, and obviously, any man or woman who does not spend time in prayer cannot be called a disciple of Jesus.
Jesus has promised salvation for everybody. This salvation will be achieved only if we are able to persevere in following him with our daily cross on our shoulders. We need Jesus Christ! Therefore, to obtain our salvation, we must persevere in our living faith. The question is, will Jesus upon His return on earth find perseverance among His people? This Sunday let us ask God to bless us with all the perseverance that we need to live our faith in Christ. Refugee Response Update It is truly inspirational to be able to provide you with an update on our Parish response to the recent request to provide household items and donations for the next Refugee settlement in Wellington. In just 7 days we: - collected the vast majority of items needed to set up a couple in a new home. Many items were new, all were of high quality, and carefully presented. We even collected more than we needed for some items (such as pillows) and we've stored these for next time. - gave the huge amount of $1,003.00 in cash donations. With this money we were able to purchase the few items that were missing from our donations of goods: a brand new red microwave oven, a large floor-mat, double blanket, mattress protector, clock, radio and an extra set of stainless steel pots. Remaining funds will be used for the greatest needs in the next intake, expected to be in December. Finally, we have a team of 5 volunteers who will have set up a home for a family of six in Miramar by the time you are reading this notice. We will provide a further update on that in a future newsletter to give you an appreciation of just how your generosity put to use. All that remains is to say again, sincerely - thank you. What an incredibly tangible expression of kindness you have given so willingly and quickly. Today’s readings present the theme of ‘Gratitude’ that should come spontaneously from the heart of every individual. God has a prominent place in the life of every one of us. He has created every individual person and has given life and sustenance; it is he who continually gives his protection and care. He is our Saviour and the Redeemer. What is expected from us is gratitude to him and becoming aware how much we have been given. What is Gratitude? Gratitude is an expression of heart counting the blessing and acknowledging everything that person receives. Giving thanks or being gratitude makes people happier and more content. It strengthens relationships, it improves health and it reduces stress. Our common experience is that we often take for granted what God has done and fail to acknowledge the good he has done to us. What is needed in our life is the recognition of the good and acknowledgement of the gratitude towards God and our fellow beings. The month of October is also known as the Month of the Holy Rosary. October 7th is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary and the month of October is traditionally the month of the Holy rosary. Since the prayer of the Rosary come from such excellent sources – from our Lord himself, from inspired Scriptures, and from the Church, it is not surprising that the Rosary is so dear to our blessed Mother and so powerful with heaven.
The Rosary is Christocentric setting forth the entire life of Jesus Christ, passion, death, resurrection and glory. Of course, the Rosary honours and contemplates Mary too, and rightly so, for the reason that the Liturgical year does likewise: “Because of the mission she received from God, her life is more closely linked with the mysteries of Jesus Christ, and there is no one who has followed in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word more closely and with more merits than she. (Mediator Dei). The Rosary stands revealed as a dynamic teacher and nurture of Christian faith, morality, and Spiritual perfection, fostering in various ways faith, hope, charity and other virtues and meditating special graces, all to the end that we may become more like unto Christ. To sum up, the rosary is a prayer highly recommended by the Blessed Mother herself as well as popes and saints. The goal of the rosary is the greater love for God and union with Him. Mother Aubert’s Anniversary of Death When Suzanne Aubert died in 1926 her funeral was the largest ever given to a New Zealand woman. Humble yet determined she had made an extraordinary impact on society, and thousands – from the upper echelons to the very poor - lined the streets of Wellington to pay their respects as her body was drawn through the city. For 66 years of her life in our land she had brought hope and courage to all especially to the needy. Today Suzanne continues to inspire us by her writings and example. Many of the social challenges and injustices Suzanne faced are still with us now. This anniversary prompts us therefore to ponder deeply our response to the social, health and educational needs of Māori, Pākehā and indeed all those who today call New Zealand home. Suzanne Aubert founded the Sisters of Compassion in 1883 and still today the Sisters continue her pattern of service founded on faith, love and compassion. Please pray today for the Sisters and may our nation be blessed through further vocations to the Sisters of Our Lady of Compassion. Gascoigne Educational Scholarship 2016.
