Dear sisters and brothers, let us rediscover the message of hope that will help us in spirituality grow and experience the work of God in our lives.
Message: dialogue, confession and commission There could be time when we are defiant and strong headed, focused to do what we want to. This creates road blocks and obstacle for our social and spiritual growth and for others. Our ego keeps us to monologue; as dialogue involves listening and that makes us vulnerable and dynamic. The moment of opening our ears to others, is the moment of change and that leads to confession. Often disciples misunderstood Jesus’ mission and message. They put Jesus on his toes at important times, like request of the mother of James and John to be at the right hand and left just after transfiguration; Peter refusing Jesus to complete his call. Instead Jesus being embarrassed of them, takes time to explain to them the message for which he is sent; they would perfectly agree with him and be ready to give their life for it. It is a call to enter into the dialogue which we are called to with Jesus who will ready to reveal to us the eternal truth. Seek the truth and the truth will liberate you. We can let’s do it and live. God’s love surpasses every human desire
Dear brothers and sisters, what makes a person, person of integrity! You know every one of us try to live authentic life day in and day out. There is always contrast struggle between two things: to do good for others on the one hand, and to remain content with oneself. To do good for others takes you out of your comfort zone, sometimes even unchartered territory. Whereas content with oneself will never walk out of one’s comfort zone and everything should revolve around. In the gospel Jesus seems to be unmoved by the plea of the Canaanite woman but her faith reminds Jesus who he is. He exclaims, “O Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” Now the woman takes unprecedented step for her daughter’s health and wellbeing; Jesus, responds equally with mercy and greatly admired the faith of the woman. Human desire give way to faith in God and God in His love restores health. When have you prayed for something for yourself, which gave way to God’s will and faith? Has your faith ever drawn you to deeper in prayer, resilience in doing good for others? Let God’s love find you and mould you to do His will. One of the results of growing older and striving to live by faith is that my views of God have changed. As a child, God was like my father in the flesh – quiet, aloof, seemingly uninterested in my day-to-day life, and quite able and willing to punish me when I needed correction. God wound up the world like an eight-day clock and, as it ran, he went off to other more interesting things, leaving the world to itself. Stereotypes and confused views of God die hard and it has taken me a lifetime to overcome this childish faith. Living daily in the sacred writings certainly challenges our warped or one-dimensional views of the nature of God. Elijah had faced off with the false prophets and God had shown that he alone is God by sending down fire and consuming the sacrifice in front of the people. He is told that he should "Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by." God is powerful and he will again demonstrate that power. God was in a tiny whispering sound. Elijah saw God as the God of power and might. Do not look for God only in demonstrations of power. He is also in the weak, the tiny. God gives, gives, and then gives. As the saying goes, he gives until it hurts. Everything we have comes from God and he does not give grudgingly. The spirit of Jesus who gave himself for others. He is Lord of heaven and earth. Many people… are able to weave bonds of belonging and togetherness which convert overcrowding into an experience of community in which the walls of the ego are torn down and the barriers of selfishness overcome.” – Pope Francis Each year in September, the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference promotes Social Justice Week. During this week we apply Catholic social teaching to one particular issue of social justice in New Zealand. This year the theme for parishes is Weaving bonds of belonging: Knowing our neighbours. Pope Francis highlights that many of the social issues we face today reflect a decline in social connectedness. This Social Justice Week, we invite everyone to take up the challenge to creatively reach out and weave deeper bonds of belonging in our whānau, our parish, and our wider community. The August 13 - 26 issue of NZ Catholic is out now. Some headlines are: Ending of Life report sparks media critique. Why is there not more theology in homilies? Presbytery becomes new emergency housing. Antiquated notion of priesthood harms Church. The next issue of NZ Catholic will be published on August 27. Today’s feast of the transfiguration of Jesus is one of those gospel events that steps out of the ordinary as does, for example, the account of the baptism of Jesus by John. Both involve the presence of the divine and the divinely inspired. I think of the transfiguration as something like “Advertisement for the coming the Kingdom of God.” The event takes place near the end of Jesus’ public ministry and seems to act as a glimpse into the very near future -- Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Scripture scholar, Tom Wright, invites his readers to discover a parallel between this transfiguration moment and the crucifixion of Jesus. It can be compared schematically this way: TRANSFIGURATION CRUCIFIXION Jesus revealed in GLORY Jesus revealed in SHAME His clothes SHINING WHITE Clothes roughly STRIPPED OFF Jesus with MOSES & ELIJAH Jesus with TWO THIEVES Surrounded by SHINING CLOUD DARKNESS covers the land Our invitation is to acknowledge the glory in the crucifixion. Our lives are filled with experiences that we could describe as transfigurations: think of the birth of a child; honours coming from the hard work of getting an education; truly enjoying the benefits of good health. The same glory shines through both real-life situations if we but let it in, and in so doing we let Christ in at ever-deeper levels of our lives. Lord, help me to live into the reality of Christ’s life, death and resurrection in my own history. Let me be more deeply aware of Jesus’ presence to me and to live into as well as out of that glorious inviting presence that you are to me. This we do in prayer. But we cannot stay there! Encounter with God in prayer inspires us anew to “descend the mountain” and return to the plain where we meet many brothers and sisters weighed down by fatigue, sickness, injustice, ignorance, poverty both material and spiritual. To these brothers and sisters in difficulty, we are called to bear the fruit of that experience with God, by sharing the grace we have received.
