Sir 35, 12-14. 16-18; 2 Tim 4, 6-8. 16-18; Lk 13, 1-9
What Do We See? Dear sisters and brothers, I am drawn by a detail in today’s gospel. It has to do with eyes, with what the main characters are seeing. It is striking that the Pharisee sees the tax collector. His eyes are roving about as he prays in the temple. By contrast, the tax collector sees nothing, certainly not the Pharisee, since we are told that the tax collector “would not even raise his eyes to heaven.” This detail raises the question of what one sees, how one sees, and reminds us of the haunting phrase spoken by the Lord in 1 Samuel 16, 7. As the sons of Jesse are presented before him, he is sure that the number one son is the Lord’s choice. But here the Lord trains and corrects Samuel’s sight: “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart.” How do we acquire such sight, eyes that see as the Lord sees? One only begins to see with God’s eyes when the heart has been humbled. Knowing our own sinfulness, our identity as loved sinners, gives us new eyes so that we look out on the world and, especially on other people, the way God does. When we see others from such a heart, we see brothers and sisters who are “like me,” in contrast with the eyes of the Pharisee, who does not see from the heart and can only observe that “I am not like the rest of humanity.” Such a humble heart is the key to everything: “Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance” (St. Augustine). Lord, humble our hearts. Give us your eyes! Ex 17, 8-13; 2 Tim 3, 14-4,2. Lk 18, 1-8
“Mom, can I have this? I’m starving.” “What are we having for dinner?” “When do we eat?” It’s a nightmare – the checkout aisle in a grocery store with two kids. It’s more than an hour to dinner, stuck behind someone who last shopped six weeks ago. I tune out the non-stop “petitions” for the junk food within easy reach. Whew! Glad those days are done!!!! Says a mum. If this is how God feels about our endless prayers for things that are the spiritual equivalent of junk food. Does He care if All Black wins Rugby world cup? Today’s gospel from Luke invites us to reflect on how we communicate with God. “I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.” Jesus invites us to freely and persistently tell God about our needs, often our only form of prayer. But if this is what Jesus wants us to do, why does it seem that our prayers go unanswered? If only praying were like ordering a pizza. You tell God what you want and He delivers it. Of course, it’s more complicated. Eileen Wirth says, “I spent 25 years teaching students that “communication” is two-way. You have to listen as well as talk and that’s true of communicating with God. Even a seeming non-response IS a response. It’s often a way of saying I heard you but I’m not doing what you ask and I have my reasons, like a mom turning out requests for chocolate in the grocery store” to her child. Students who were devastated not getting a job that they had prayed for were often elated when God seemingly sent them something better. Most of us have experienced the failures that led to later success. Today’s gospel suggests that a listening, loving God answers our petitions but not necessarily in the way we seek. There will always be mysteries about answers to prayers. Why do children die of cancer? Why are there wars or droughts? Why do people suffer despite our bombarding heaven on their behalf? There may be no good answers in human terms but we need to trust Jesus’ promise that if we ask God for help persistently, he will respond in some way. Blessed be God forever. Pope Francis has called for a celebration of missionary work and its importance to our faith. In this video we meet two New Zealanders doing incredible work teaching at a school in Ranong, Thailand; Father Frank Bird SM and Katie Fisher. https://youtu.be/rBJxO3rWFj4 To be said by all at the end of the prayers of the faithful Heavenly Father, when your only Begotten Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead, He instructed His followers to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Your Holy Spirit has led us to understand that through our Baptism we are called and sent to share in this mission of the Church. Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel, so that the mission entrusted to the Church, which is still continuing, may find new and productive expressions that bring life and light to the world. Help us make it possible for peoples to experience the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,One God, forever and ever. Amen. Today we are called to be grateful to God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one returns to thank him. In the first reading when Naaman is cured of leprosy he is so grateful he wants to give a big gift. Leprosy was an incurable and isolating condition. It was a big deal. Of the ten who were healed, only one came back to thank him. And that one was a foreigner, a Samaritan. Jesus wonders why the others didn’t return. Were they not grateful? This was seriously a big deal. And why did the foreigner come back, not his own countrymen? He might have expected his own people to show their gratitude, and might have thought the stranger would not. They had all asked for healing. When he passed they cried out to him to have pity on them. They called him by name. They called him Master. They were asking specifically for a favour. But then when they received it, they did not give thanks, they just went on their way. In the French novel, Candide, Candide finds himself in El Dorado, a Utopia set apart from the rest of the world. He is curious about their life and culture and asks about their religion – if they have religion, if there are various sects and if they fight about religion. The priest tells him that of course they have religion, and they only have one, the only one possible – they thank God constantly for everything they are given. The priest seems confused that anyone could even conceive of any other religion. What else should people do but thank God constantly for everything they are given. In the Gospel verse today we are told to give thanks to God in all circumstances. In the first reading Naaman gives thanks and gifts for his cure. In the Gospel the Samaritan leper who thanks Jesus is told that his faith has saved him. Every day we enjoy the miracle of life. Every day we wake up we should thank God for everything we are given. What else should we do? In this extraordinary month of mission: be grateful to God for everything you have and you are. Fr Ephrem Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Let us all be missionaries of healing and hope and offer the best of ourselves to the building of a better world. Plans were remade in the 1930s for the real church to be built and opened in 1938. These plans also died. Dear sisters and brothers, in today's Gospel we hear Jesus teach about faith and service to God. The context is a continuing dialogue between Jesus and his followers about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Jesus has just finished an instruction on sin and forgiveness. There are two related teachings that Jesus offers to his disciples when they cry out for an increase in faith. The first is the familiar reminder that faith, even just a little, will enable the followers of Jesus to do wondrous things. But this uplifting and inspiring teaching is quickly followed by the second teaching, a caution about knowing one's place in God's plans. The disciples of Jesus are to understand themselves as servants to God and his plans. Even when God works wonders through us, with our mustard seed-sized faith, we must not seek praise. Our participation in God's plans is God's grace to us—nothing more, nothing less. When we are graced enough to cooperate with God, the work we do is nothing more than our obligation to God as faithful stewards. And yet, our faith enables us to believe that what we have offered in service to God, as his servants, can be made to produce a hundredfold. It is amazing thing to see God working through us. It takes minimum time to spend in the rest home to listen the lonely and elderly people. It is ordinary and so simple to just sit and talk with someone for a few minutes the. But there is grace in our spiritual and worldly immaturity. We can still recognise that God is at work. And once you get a taste of God working through you to bring joy to others, you are hooked. There is no better feeling in the world. You have made his or her day. You have given them hope of better tomorrow in the Lord. The extraordinary month of mission calls to the awareness of our responsibility to continue the mission entrusted by Christ to his disciples to make centre of our lives. Through you and me the Church carries out the mission by virtue of our baptism. The missionary activity therefor, is not tied to the generosity of a few who are “sent” but, all the Church of God is in a state of mission. That is why, Paul’s reminder to Timothy of God’s gifts to make use of the salvation of many. Will you go and visit someone today, who might be just lonely and waiting to be visited. Closing date: 31 October 2019 Venerable Suzanne Aubert: A missionary who made NZ her home At the beginning of the extraordinary month of Mission called by Pope Francis, we remember one of the great missionaries who came to New Zealand 150 years ago. Venerable Suzanne Aubert was just 25 when she responded to Christ’s call to leave her native country of France and travel to New Zealand. Her mission was to answer God’s call to bring the love of Christ to all people in Aotearoa New Zealand. She had a particular calling to serve Māori, and she became known to the tangata whenua as Meri Hohepa. She established the first soup kitchen in New Zealand still serving thousands of meals a year, homes for abandoned children and the severely disabled and a hospital to care for the sick and dying. Suzanne died here in Aotearoa New Zealand 94 years ago this week. For 66 years of her life she sought to reflect the compassionate face of Jesus to all she encountered. Venerable Suzanne has already reached the second of four steps on her journey to sainthood. The findings of an inquiry held earlier this year to investigate an alleged miracle through her intercession are currently being examined in Rome. If Rome accepts that the miracle occurred through Suzanne’s intercession, she can be beatified, and thus universally acclaimed as a true and humble follower of Jesus, inspiring us on our own journey or hikoi of faith. Prayer for the beatification of Suzanne Aubert Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us that as often as we show compassion to the least of your brothers and sisters, we show it to you. Hear our prayers that Venerable Suzanne Aubert, who loved the Māori people and devoted her life to the poor, the sick and the underprivileged, and whom the Church has declared to be one of your true and humble followers, may soon be recognised as a saint. Amen. Many young people all over the world are making their voices heard and calling for courageous decisions… The young remind us that the earth is not a possession to be squandered, but an inheritance to be handed down. They remind us that hope for tomorrow is not a noble sentiment, but a task calling for concrete actions here and now. We owe them real answers, not empty words, actions not illusions.
