This weekend we are celebrating the Palm Sunday. What is the Palm Sunday? Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into the Holy City Jerusalem. The solemn entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem is one of the most important and significant events in His life. This event took place in the year AD 33. The setting was Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. But Rome had conquered Israel a century earlier and there was animosity between Jews and the Rome. Jesus had just raised Lazarus a week earlier and news of this miracle was spreading like wildfire. People were hearing about Him everywhere and wondering: would this be the man to free them from Rome. Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem on a foal a donkey. Jesus did this to fulfil what was prophesied 500 years ago by prophet Zachariah: Rejoice, rejoice people of Zion! Look, your king is coming to you! Shout for joy, you people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you! He comes Triumphant and Victorious, but humble and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.” As Jesus rod into the town, thousands of people joined Him in their excitement. St. Mathew 21:10 says, “the city was thrown into uproar.”
It is also important to note that Jesus’ arrival was in direct contrast to another ruler. At this same moment that Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem from the East, Pontus Pilate was entering Jerusalem from the West end. The procession came from opposite direction and in opposite fashion. Pilate had thousands of military soldiers to express military power and might while Jesus entered on a lowly animal donkey to express His humility, Pilot displayed his wealth and power while Jesus entered with declaration of Peace, Pilot was feared by the crowds while Jesus was cheered the crowds. By this opposing display, Jesus purposefully contrasted His kingdom with the kingdom of the world. When Jesus comes into our lives, He wants there to be a clear contrast with between the values of His kingdom and the values of the world. Who would be our choice? Pilate or Jesus? I tell you solemnly, unless a wheat grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life.” This weekend we have so many themes to reflect upon. I am not going to reflect everyone. I would like to reflect upon Jn:12: 24-25. What is this amazing paradox which Jesus is teaching us here? He is basically saying three things here which are all variations of one centre truth and all at the heart of Christian faith and life. Firstly: He is saying that only by death comes life. We all know that any seed or grain remains single and is ineffective and unfruitful as long as it is not sown in the ground. But when it is put in the soil it dies there and then there comes up a new life and yields a rich harvest. Some months back I had put some seeds of bean and zucchini. When they died there came up new plants and they are yielding lots of beans and zucchinis which I am enjoying and sharing with others also. Similarly, we must die spiritually in order to bear good fruits. Secondly: He is saying that only by spending life do we retain it. We who love our life are moved by two aims: By selfishness and by desire for security. Not once or twice but many times Jesus said that those who hoard their life will lose it; but those who spent their life must in the end gain it. It is therefore better to burn out than to rust out. Thirdly: He is saying that only by service comes greatness. If we remember someone with great love and respect today are the people who served others honestly. eg St.Teresa of Kolkotta. Jesus taught the world that only by death come new life; that only by spending life do we retain it; and that only by serving comes greatness

Dear brothers and sisters, we are half the way on our Lenten journey. I think it a suitable time for us to sit down quietly to cheque and review this faith journey of ours. We should plane out here for our next move of our faith journey. Our aim during this Lenten season is to be with the Lord in his prayer and fasting, pain and suffering and gain eternal life in Him. The Lord is inviting us during this Lent saying: “come to me all who are heavily laden and burden and I will give you rest.” We know, we are unworthy people, yet the Lord says; come as you are that is how I want you, don’t be afraid.” God the Father loved the world so much that He sent his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. God the Father has not sent his Son to condemn us but so that through him we might be saved. We might have sometimes forgotten his unconditional love, mercy and forgiveness. I think this is a great opportunity for us to rebuild our broken relationship with him and come back to him.
Dear friends we are challenged to reflect on God’s immense love for us or our love for God; but this in this period of Lent we consider God’s love fist. God made us to live in the light of his love. But this original friendship with God was corrupted by sin. Our sin causes us to shy away from Christ, the light that has come to the world. During the season of Lent, we try to fight this tendency by remembering God’s great mercy and the salvation that we have received through Jesus. We do not fear confessing our sins, knowing that God forgives us and so, during Lent we seek out opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently especially Tia Paasi and Kevin Collett and those whose anniversaries occur around this time including Sieki Halafihi, Naureen Colgate, Donald Duerr and Donald Richardson. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially John Rogers, Graeme Adams and Steve Kuzmicich and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community Lent: a call to cleanse our temples
We all want to enjoy pollution free environment of earth, of water and of air. To achieve this objective we have lot of projects for systematic disposition of unwanted goods either to be recycled or treated as rubbish. There are agencies to mind the job. There are individual volunteers who volunteer to pick up rubbish from the roadside and other public places. Besides, to maintain our environment clean we do not want to put plants which may emit polluted water, air or any substance that are hazardous to our health. We prefer to import ready made goods from other countries where pollution level is quite high. It is rightly said cleanliness is next to godliness. To achieve this objective we need to clean our interior temple too rather than its surroundings. We are God’s temple a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1Cor 3:16, 6:19). This temple has been tarnished by pollutions i.e. immorality, hatred, jealousy, violence, anger, ambition, division, faction, envy etc. (Gal. 5:19-21). These are the sources of pollution to our hearts. By offering the season of Lent the church has given us an added opportunity to empty all the rubbish into bin which Jesus is ready to carry on his own shoulder (Is. 53:4-5). As rubbish cleaner, Jesus himself offers us various powerful means to cleanse our temple (heart) such as his own powerful words which anoints and purifies, is living and effective, sharper than double edge sword, it pierces the division of the soul and spirit… judges the intentions and thoughts of heart (Heb. 4:12). If you hear God’s voice today, do not be stubborn (Heb.4:7). Sacrament of reconciliation is another but most effective means to put our rubbish (sins) into recycle bin from where Jesus is ever ready to delete forever. Prayer is yet another powerful weapon to resist the onslaught of satanic forces which invites us to pray constantly so as not to be put to the test (Lk.22:40). The best way of keeping our temple cleansed is vigilance as proposed by St. Peter, “Be calm and vigilance because your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Stand up to him strong in faith” 1Pt. 5:8-9. Let’s examine ourselves and be honest with ourselves and with God. Let’s cleanse the “temples” of our hearts. Learning Support Volunteers – A Gift to St Patrick’s College Some of our students at St Patrick’s College need assistance sitting their NCEA exams and may need a person to read the question to them or handwrite their paper on their behalf. Learning Support at St Patrick’s College is about giving all students a better chance of achieving equality of educational opportunities. The students we work with have a range of learning difficulties – none of which have anything to do with intelligence. NZQA enable students diagnosed with learning difficulties like Dyslexia to have assistance to sit their internal and external exams – such as needing a person to read the question for them, or a person acting as their scribe. This year we have 30 senior boys needing assistance and we rely on volunteers to help, acting as students eyes to read or hands to write. We train our Reader/Writers and need their support during school hours in Term time. We hold a morning tea each term so volunteers can catch up with each other. If you wish to sign up to be a volunteer Reader/Writer at St Patrick’s College please email: Michelle Duffy, Head of Learning Support on: [email protected] Piano lesson book sponsorship – St Patrick’s School A very generous piano teacher is providing free piano lessons to a couple of our students.
