Yes, God, you are the Christ -- the King of the UNIVERSE! All creation bows in reverence to you. You are so very present! Dear sisters and brothers, the image isn’t a cosmic world, but that of a shepherd. Not quite what people were expecting of a king when Jesus entered the scene. Not a messiah of power to rule a world with oppression, war, revolution and violence. Let us imagine, a shepherd king, under a starry sky caring for the flock with tenderness and love. Such is the metaphor scripture gives us. Thus, says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep as a shepherd tends his flock…EZ 34: 11-The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. —Psalm 23 With this great feast, we come to the end of our liturgical year only to begin again next week with the first Sunday of Advent. Over a span of a year, we have heard in Scripture of the creation of the world, and the universe in Christ through whom all was created. We pray in our Creed, Through Him all things, visible and invisible were created. We have lived through a cycle of prayer where we have celebrated our King in the Eucharist with Scripture reflecting on and praying with the WORD MADE FLESH—the Christ. Jesus has taught us the way to discipleship while giving us a glimpse of the Kingdom of God. For when I was thirsty, you gave me a drink; hungry, you gave me food; imprisoned, you set me free; naked, you clothed me. What you did for the least of these, you did for me. Remember the Beatitudes? Blessed are you who do all these things and yours is the Kingdom of heaven! Christ our Shepherd King gave us a new law of love and showed us how to live it in right relationship with God, self, others and the universe. He is the Lamb of God, the King who gave his life that we may have eternal life: Christ has been raised from the dead…in Christ shall all be brought to life. Christ, King of the Universe. Dear brothers and sisters, In today’s Gospel master gives servants money to care for a while he is away. Two of the servants invest the money and can give back more than they were given when their master returns. The other, afraid of losing the money, buried it to protect it and so was able to give the master exactly what he had been entrusted with. The two rewarded but the one reprimanded and taken away whatever he had. He thought he would be praised for not losing the money. Returning the coins was the least he could do. Lack of initiative to go above and beyond. The others took a risk and blessed with, but the third servant was afraid of such a situation and chose to take the safer route and preserve the money. If he got in trouble for returning the exact amount, what would have happened if he had lost the money? We are those servants. What will we do with what God has given us? Will we hide our light under a bushel, or will we take risk and make the best use of our talents and give back more than we have been given. Preserving our lives is the least we can do. We can use our hearts and minds to give glory to God and to help each other. We can be like the wife in the first reading who takes her husband’s love and gives back even more. We should be like the enterprising servants who take a risk, but return even more than they were given. Let’s risk our family, social life and spiritual life and invest God’s goodness given to us, invest them for peace and harmonious living of our life. Remember there is no gain without pain. Speaker: Michael Powell Theme: The gift of Word of Knowledge. Evening includes Praise & Worship, group discussion and fellowship. 19th November 2017 - First World Day of the Poor “let us love, not with words but with deeds” Riches and success are often equated with possessions and the independence that comes from having more than enough to live on. Poverty is usually described as having nothing, or lacking the essentials in food and shelter. But these contrasts collapse when we realise how equal we actually are. We are connected; we share a common home – Earth. We own nothing. All is gift. Approaching poverty in this way becomes a very humbling experience. I start to see the sense of looking out for one another, sharing what comes my way, and living responsibly, justly and lovingly. Pope Francis has initiated the first World Day of the Poor to help us recognise our poverty before God and to make greater efforts to respond to the enormity and richness of God’s love for us. Such recognition can help shape us into people of compassion, understanding and acceptance. With these qualities we not only respond to God’s love for us, but we reach out with open hearts and hands to the needs of our sisters and brothers In the words of Pope Francis, the World Day of the Poor is to encourage believers to react against a culture of discard and waste, and to embrace the culture of encounter. We do not live in the dark; we live in the light of Jesus Christ. So we cannot claim ignorance of the struggles that people face in coping with daily life... As Christians, we cannot bury our “one talent” – we cannot hide our light. We are called to be stewards of the gift we have been given – to place it at the service of others – our “one talent” becomes part of a great patchwork that draws the gifts of all together. Together we overcome the difficulties of each. Those with “many talents” risk becoming selfish – trading them for more; becoming richer at the expense of others. Manipulation, exploitation, greedily grasping the little others have... Blessed are the open hands that embrace the poor and help them – bring hope Blessed are the hands that reach beyond every barrier of culture, religion and nationality, and pour the balm of consolation over the wounds of humanity. Blessed are the open hands that ask nothing in exchange... These are hands that call down blessings upon their brothers and sisters. (Pope Francis) Those who are poor, whether financially, intellectually or spiritually, invariably feel powerless to effect any change. Those who are rich in resources can easily overlook or ignore the poverty of others. This first World Day of the Poor is an opportunity for a meeting of minds and hearts, regardless of circumstance. Poverty and richness can each contribute to the welfare of both, joining hands to understand need, to respect dignity, to work together. Every one of us is poor in spirit. It is the love of God that gifts us with life. It is our love for each other that enriches life. To watch the Cardinal’s message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_IrIO0xKcs&feature=youtu.be. Dear sisters and brothers, In this world where good and evil can occupy the same space, we must be wise and vigilant; stately roses and disruptive weeds can share the same garden, we must be wise and vigilant; the foolish and the wise can sit together at the same table, we must be the wise and prudent ones. The question is: how often are we prepared to be the wise one? The idea of being unprepared is strange; we need to be one step ahead. We come meetings with every document already in hand along with additional research, just in case. We have our shoulders high and ready for whatever comes my way that day. Having said that, I don’t think we can sincerely brag about our spiritual preparedness. Growing up, my grandmother would tell us stories to explain why it wasn’t right to tell a lie, or why it was wrong to steal, and so on. I used to hear her stories and say to myself, “why can’t grandma just say what she means? Why does she have to tell us these stories?” As I got older, it occurred to me that not only did she just enjoy using stories to convey life lessons, but the life lessons made more sense once digested, and became nourishment for my soul. Today’s Gospel reminds me of my grandmother’s stories — a little esoteric, thought-provoking, with moments that make you want to ask a question, but hold back, and in a way, open to interpretation. Like any parable, the reader is invited to do more than just read it. The reader is invited to eat slowly, let the words digest, and relish the total mind and soul effect at the moment when we realize that we have being enriched, and awakened by the words; by the parable of ten virgins; by the story. This Gospel prompts us to stay spiritually awake, and to be prepared to bring light to the darkness. The greatest among you must be your servant. When we stop and really open our hearts to Jesus, we can recognize once again that we are far from perfect. But the good news for us is that Jesus is not looking for perfection in us but humility and service. Jesus reminds us that we are brothers and sisters, part of the human family. He urges us to be compassionate and not to let our lives get sidetracked by the external rewards offered by our society. Jesus invites all of us, even the greatest among us, to be a servant. If we alter the way we think about the kind of service Jesus is calling us to? As we consider being a servant, we change the meaning to love. I am a servant to my husband: I serve my husband by loving him better; husband loving his wife better. Parents are called to serve their children – to love them. Many of us are servants for/loving – our elderly parents. In my life today, I am no longer raising children, but I am serving/loving my husband/wife each day as much as I can. And I have grandchildren to care for, and my adult children to love in new ways. Our goal is to be a servant for those who suffer, sharing this pain with Jesus. It is that awareness of others and the compassion I pray for that counteracts what Pope Francis calls the globalization of indifference. The first reading from Malachi echoes the gospel with the same challenges to the religious leaders who had grown lazy in their duties. Malachi reproaches: they “have turned aside from the way, and have caused many to falter” by their instruction. “Have we not all the one father? Has not the one God created us? Health and Safety at Holy Trinity Parish There have been a few incidents at St Patrick’s Church recently. While these are being dealt with, there are some points to remember for all of us when praying or working at any of our three Churches or around Parish property:
Proverbs 27:12 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. Further Security After two recent incidents at St Patricks Church, a former parishioner donated some security cameras to help deter intruders and also for monitoring the building entrances. These cameras are mounted at the entrances to the chapel and main body of the Church. (Please be assured that these cameras are NOT monitoring people’s prayer activity inside the Church; if there is an incident the camera footage will be viewed by the Parish Priest and the Finance Chairperson or the Parish Priest and the Parish Pastoral Council Chairperson) If you have a query, please email the parish office and someone from the Finance Committee will get back to you. He did this in order to help them better understand the poor surroundings in which Jesus was born and to make the wondrous event of the Incarnation more real to them. The people came with candles and torches to attend Holy Mass by the crib and seeing the scene were reminded of God's love for us in sending His only son to be born in the poverty of a manger. 794 years later, the tradition continues and each Christmas we see again the Child born to save mankind. We would like to help you keep this age-old tradition alive by offering a selection of beautiful nativities that will bring Christ to your mind, hearts and homes this Christmas.
