When Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you a King?” his answer was in affirmative, but he added very clearly, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” As he is not like the rulers of this world, he is not like the rulers of this world, living in luxury, enjoying all pomp and wealth, taking best of everything for themselves leaving their people in poverty and misery. Whereas Jesus King of Kings lived in sharp contrast to those rulers, carrying the burden of all his subjects’ sins in the form of the Cross. The solemnity of Christ the King established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 was to give Christ Highest Title of honor who established God’s kingdom here on earth. Although emperors and kings now exist mostly in history books, we still honor Christ as the King of the Universe by enthroning him in our hearts and allowing him to take control of our lives. At the time of baptism, we have made alliance with this King and promised our loyalty him. Significantly, on the top of the Cross, Pilate put up the inscription, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. It was he who formerly condemned Jesus to death, but strangely, he was the first to recognize the kingship of Christ. The second to recognize it was the good thief who prayed to him, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom”. Jesus answered, “Today you shall be with me in paradise.” Yes, same Christ the king is calling all heavily laden with burn, come to me I will give you rest. The same Jesus the law giver gives us a new commandment, “Love one another as I have loved you.” It is the shepherd King Jesus who knows us his flock by name even ready to die to protect us. He loves his subjects and identifies himself with hungry, thirsty, naked, homeless etc. and taking care of their needs is doing service to Christ the King who having all authority in heaven earthly will reward us for our good deeds. Let us once again renew our allegiance and loyalty to Christ the King. You might even like to make up a whole hamper. On Friday 20 December 2019 our team of drivers and helpers will deliver the boxes of food and items to over 50 households in the district. This collection is a practical way we can reach out to bring Christ’s love to the homes of our neighbours who are really struggling and for whom this extra help will alleviate their burden. As the Church year comes to an end, the Sunday readings reflect on the final days of the world, our own death and the final judgment. Today's theme is “The Day of the Lord” or the “second coming” of Jesus in glory as judge at the end of the world. Malachi in the first reading foretells this Day, giving the warning that the future, known to God alone, will bring healing and reward for the just who forearm themselves with words and works such as peace, justice, mercy and truth, and retribution for the “proud and all evil doers.” Although Paul expected to be alive at the return of Jesus, he cautions the Thessalonians in the second reading against the idleness with which some of them were anticipating the end and encourages them not to be weary of doing good. He suggests that the best preparation for the future is to devote the attention to present duties, to maintain a holy and wholesome balance between prayer and service and to develop enduring family ties and values. Today’s Gospel passage warns that the date of the end of the world is uncertain. Signs and portents will precede the end, and the faithful will be called upon to testify before kings and governors. The good news, however, is that those who persevere in faithfulness to the Lord will save their souls and enter God's eternal kingdom. The readings invite us to be keen observers of the signs of the times happening every day in the world. They also warn us to be alert and prepared to face any circumstance of the unknown future. Whatever Jesus told about his body and the temple was fulfilled. So also, he foretold about the persecution of his followers and is taking place in various parts of the world. Only the perseverance will secure our lives with his assurance of our final victory. Thus, the message of the day is: don't give up; God is always with us. As we near the end of the Church's liturgical year, the readings become more eschatological -- having to do with the end times. The main theme of today’s readings is the resurrected life of glory in heaven. The readings invite us to consider the true meaning of the resurrection in our lives. The first reading states the Jewish belief in martyrdom and the resurrection of the just. The intense sufferings to which good Jews were subjected brought them to the conviction that the justice of God would reward the faithful in the afterlife, and would also punish the wicked. The second reading encourages the Thessalonians who were waiting for the second coming of Christ and resurrection of the dead to trust in the fidelity of God and to open their eyes to the fact that the Lord strengthened their hearts in every good work and word. Today’s Gospel affirms the victory of God and God’s love over the power of death. Jesus speaks of God as a God of the living, who promises that the ones who will rise are God’s children. The Gospel shows us how Jesus ingeniously escaped from a doctrinal trap set for him and explained the doctrine about the resurrection of the dead supported by the Pharisees and denied by the Sadducees. Jesus also explained that heavenly life with God in glory is totally different from earthly life and that there is no marriage in heaven in the earthly sense. The basis of our Christian faith is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We express in the profession of our faith in creed. As pilgrims heading towards the beatific vision of God, we prepare ourselves equipped with the Word of God, Sacraments and other spiritual preparation. As believers the thought of death never scares. It is like running a race to win the unfading wreath prepared for us. Let the hope of resurrection inspire us to lead a good Christian life. As we are in the month of November let keep in our prayer all dear deceased ones. FACT The stained glass windows, gifted to the Parish by the Sisters of Mercy, had previously been in St Catherine’s Convent. The large window in the chapel was gifted by Mr and Mrs Famularo in memory of their 8 year old son Paul who was killed in an accident on Onepu Rd. The carved altar, the font and lectern also came from the St Catherine’s Convent. The altar and the wooden panels had been carved by Sr Mary Chanel Burton in 1916-17. She later died in the 1918 flu epidemic. The Perfection of Sound’ – the story behind the Maxwell Fernie Organ at St Mary of the Angels is the subject of a new, about to be released book and everybody is invited to the launch. Using the collected correspondence from a parish priest, an organ builder, English pipe-makers and Maxwell Fernie, the book describes in detail how a revolutionary new organ in Wellington was brought to life from a flat in Pimlico, London. The timing couldn't be better – 60 years after the Organ was completed and 20 years since Maxwell's death (and five years since the project started!). The launch will be held in the Crypt, at Saint Mary of the Angels Church in Wellington on Sunday November 10 at 2:30pm, with selected readings, a demonstration of the organ, a glass of wine and an opportunity to purchase the book. The common theme of today’s readings is the benevolent and forgiving mercy of God for sinners and the response of repentance and conversion expected from us. The first reading reminds us that God who created the universe with His wise and loving concern waits with the same concern for sinners to repent. He “rebukes the offenders little by little,” “warns them of their sins” and reminds them to “abandon their wickedness.” The reading focuses on the love God has for all He has created, the love that overlooks sin and gives time for repentance. In the second reading St. Paul encourages the Thessalonians to persevere in their Christian faith, giving glory to God without idly waiting for the ‘second coming’ of Christ in their lifetime. Today’s Gospel presents the beautiful story of the instantaneous conversion of the tax-collector Zacchaeus. The account describes how Jesus recognized Zacchaeus for exactly what he was, a lost sinner in need of a Savior, and how God’s grace worked in Zacchaeus to lead him from idle curiosity to repentance, conversion and restitution. The episode emphasizes the fact that such a conversion can only result from a person’s fully receiving the love, acceptance and grace of a merciful Lord. Zacchaeus is model for us in many ways as he searched the Lord with humility, overcoming hurdles the crowed on his way. As a sincere seeker he found the Lord and obtained salvation. The very interaction with the Lord with repentant heart transformed him into a new creation. From the chief tax collector, he became the chief distributor of his wealth. We too can receive Jesus by seeking Him with real effort by humbling ourselves. Receive Jesus no matter how sinful we are. Receive Jesus no matter how much hated we are. Receive Jesus as He invites us by our names. Receive Jesus without delay. Receive Jesus by coming down to Him. Receive Jesus into our life, our home. Receive Jesus with repentance and restitution.
