Dear sisters and brothers, In Isaiah, God calls his people together, promises them a sign and then expects individuals to go out and share the message of His glory. Letter to the Hebrews encourages one to view suffering and challenges as personal development. Gospel message moves outward to those who are outside of the previously chosen. Salvation history is not restricted to the people of Zion. The problem encountered here is the non acceptance of Jesus within his own people and their institutions. The Gospel highlights the danger of chosen people might lose the final invitation. A loving God who is eager to expand the fold may not have been the easiest message which a prophet might bring. I think that many of us enjoy being special. I am ashamed to say that I have caught myself feeling better because I have things that others do not have. Opening up God’s kingdom to outsiders may not have been something that was welcome in the first century and my sense is that it is not universally welcome now. I often wonder how I would have reacted as a Jew during Jesus’ lifetime. Religious leaders had a certain amount of autonomy under the Roman Prefect. I can see Jesus running up against the institutional authorities. His message called for change and reform. Let us pray: Dear Lord, heal me from desires to have what some do not. Help me to want what is good for all people. Open my ears and my heart so that I might be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. Give me the strength and courage to live the life to which I am called to. Amen Fr Ephrem Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Holy Trinity Parish Property Proposal Update In response to Cardinal John's Directive issued in February this year, a property review document is being finalised for presentation at Sunday masses next week, 1 September. Three options have been detailed at length for discussion within our parish, one of these being preferred as the most viable. Printed copies of the document will be available at the weekend masses together with a timetable showing parish meeting dates and feedback-due dates so that we can ensure we meet the deadline given by Cardinal John. Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Committee members will be at the door after masses to answer any immediate questions parishioners might have. The document will also be available on the parish website. There will be opportunities to discuss the paper at parish community meetings on 4 and 10 September. Parishioners will then have up to three weeks to think about their responses and email those to [email protected]. These responses will be taken into account in preparing the parish’s recommendation to Cardinal John. If there are parishioners who do not have access to email, the PPC and FC will consider alternative arrangements to ensure their feedback is captured. Simply phone the parish office, 388-6953. Wis 18, 6-9; Heb 11, 1-2. 8-19; Lk 12, 32-48
On my retreat last summer, I found that my prayer - relationship with Jesus - came to a simple and fairly "new" place. I just had read a piece which asked - asked me personally - "To whom do you belong?" and "Do I believe what I say I believe?" I found myself chewing these questions and returning to the simple - graced - realisation that, if I really belong to the Lord (in whom I am baptized and whose servant I desire to be) and if I really believe what I say I believe (that I have nothing to fear because Jesus has overcome the power of sin and death) then I should be a much more joyful, trusting and courageous person. Dear sisters and brothers, Jesus is laying it out for us today that we have nothing to fear. It confronts the fact that we live with a lot of fears. We live, in a self-protective mode, as though we can "control" how safe and secure we are. Jesus is inviting us to live more freely because our life is in his hands and we are going to enjoy eternal life with Him forever. I've found myself, since that retreat, asking for the grace to live with daily trust, to walk with deeply joy in my heart - even in the midst of challenging things - and to ask myself more often if I'm being courageous enough in taking risks to love more completely, to witness my faith by the ways I am self-sacrificing in my care, and to open my heart to better hear the cry of the poor, so I might be a better advocate for those without a voice. Asking for the grace alone gives me more courage to find steps in these directions in the here and now of each day. May you find Lord, fully engaged in being one with you, here and now, where your people most need this simple disciple to be. Dear sisters and brothers, St Luke’s Gospel makes much of the hindrance wealth creates for discipleship – and ultimately for attaining fullness of life in community with God and fellow human beings. Fears for the future Human beings are very insecure creatures. Wealth seems to be the most obvious source of security: with wealth we shall not go hungry or thirsty, we shall have a good roof over our heads, we shall gain influence and power; we are more likely to have good health, a long life, and enjoy the best life has to offer. But the deep fear that feeds our insecurity also feeds the desire for wealth. That desire itself can become insatiable. It can threaten to take over and control everything, making us increasingly insensitive and oblivious to other and deeper values: the needs of our fellow human beings and above all our relationship with God. In the gospel, prompting the parable is a request from a man who wants Jesus to intervene in a dispute between himself and his brother regarding the dividing up of the family inheritance. The request is not unreasonable, but it illustrates how preoccupation with matters of this kind may make people deaf to the deeper and more significant issues that Jesus is addressing. Engaging parable The parable quickly engages Jesus’ hearers. Poor, as most of them doubtless were, they would envy the landowner whose land had been so productive that his chief problem was finding space to store his harvest. They would envy even more his prospect of being able to sit back later and enjoy the good life because he had so much security stored up for many years to come. How keenly, then, they would feel the intervention of God: “This very night the demand will be made for your soul”. “Soul” basically refers to life itself but there is an overtone, surely, of the quality of a person: “what you’re worth as a human being”. This is what God will inquire about in terms of capacity for eternal life, for enjoying the riches of life with God. The only security that is really lasting consists in being “rich” in the sight of God. This is because relationship with God is the only relationship or attachment that can transcend the barrier of death. The parable powerfully illustrates how attachment to wealth – the desire to acquire, hold on to and enhance it – prevents people from attending to the relationship with God that brings the only security that counts in the long run. Such desire also poisons human relationships and erodes the concern for others that is the basis of community. Attachment to wealth in this sense is incompatible with living, sharing and celebrating what Jesus is living, sharing and celebrating: the hospitality God is offering both now and, in the life, to come. Fr Ephrem Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Church and property update The Parish Council and Finance Committee continue to progress work on Cardinal John’s February directive which was to review the total operation of our parish and its property. We had hoped to provide an update to parishioners this month but the valuations of some properties took longer than expected. We now expect to have this update to you by mid-August. Considerable information has already been gathered and evaluated, and we are now finalising the analysis to have fully reasoned options for consultation. Once we are at this point, a meeting for all parishioners will be arranged. Our deadline to advise Cardinal John of our preferred option remains at 31 October 2019. Thank you for your patience. 2019 Tindall funding round open The 2019 Funding Round for the Archdiocesan Allocation Committee is now open. Parish Groups, Agencies and Church Organisations which provide a helping hand by supporting Families and Social Services are now able to apply for the annual Tindall Funding through the Archdiocesan Allocation Committee. The priority is to fund Catholic and community organisations who are working in areas identified as priorities by The Tindall Foundation and aligned with the Archdiocesan goals. We are charged, by the Archbishop, with the funding support of groups committed to social, pastoral, charitable and educational needs in our region. Applications are judged on the basis of need, resource availability and the fulfilment of set criteria. Applications are now open and are due on Friday 30th August 2019. Application forms contact Joanne Gomez at [email protected] or 04 496 1762. Our prayers are with those who are unwell especially Denis Clarke, John Rogers, John Cairns-Cowan and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. We also pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently especially John Seamer and those whose anniversaries occur around this time including Umberto Monastra and Brian Pohem. |
