Dear sisters and brothers,
The spirit of today’s readings flows from the continuation of Luke’s Gospel and how Jesus continues offering reversals. The book of Sirach echoes traditional Jewish teachings concerning right conduct. Basically these verses say, “Remember who you are and who you are not.” Remember you are gifted by a Divine Giver and when you remain peacefully grateful you will experience being loved by God and others. A wise person listens deeply with both the outer and inner ears. The wise person searches and allows mystery to be a friend rather than a humiliating enemy which must be defeated or ignored. As water can subdue flames, generosity to the poor extinguishes the fire of past sins. These are instructive and practical. Keeping them remains a work in progress. Humility is gratitude which allows us to stay at home in our own shoes. Covering up or withdrawal is not being humble or shy, it is a prideful expression that we really should have been created with more gifts and until they appear, we will not. During the meal Jesus notices the pharisaical practices of these religious rigorists. They have been jockeying for places of honour and recognition. Jesus heightens their interest in him by relating a little parable intended to indicate their hypocrisy. The guest remarks that the blest will eat in the Kingdom of God. Jesus turns to him and what he says is in next-week’s Gospel, stay tuned Fr Ephraim Caritas Social Justice Week – 11 – 17th September 2016 As part of Social Justice Week, there will be a cup of coffee at the back of Holy Cross Church after 9am Mass on the 11th September. Someone asked him,
“Lord, will only a few people be saved ... ... ... but will not be strong enough.” Luke 13 As I’ve prayed with this gospel, I felt a new sense of it. Jesus doesn’t answer the understandable question about whether the number who will be saved is “few” – a small number. He tells us not to worry about how many will be saved, but to focus on our own journey and to choose a path which is challenging. As many of who want to, can enter by this narrow gate. That is so comforting and consoling. We can be saved through our perseverance in challenging faith journey. It does not take great things to do but be faithful in little things, confirm to the culture that is life giving. We are the messenger of good news, the world desperately in need of God's message. The Lord has opened the door of mercy for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. We are called to learn what God desires, "mercy, not sacrifice." We are steward of His good news, that is to be lived in our words and action in service to our brothers and sisters. By obeying Him we grow in His grace and holiness. This is the narrow path that world refuses to enter through. Jesus makes it clear that he, himself is the gate. When Thomas asks how we can know this way, Jesus simply said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” A personal relationship with Jesus will place us on the narrow way. In Jesus, everything else gets aligned in us. Desiring to be with him, excites desires in us to be like him, preparing us for the joy of being with him forever. The whole Book of Revelation is the study of how the stars and planets reveal, when look at in a certain way, the struggle between good and evil, between God and human selfishness and violence. This battle would be entered and won by this Messiah, Jesus. The belief in the Assumption of Mary is a “fact-faith”, that is, something we Catholics believe, because it was held early as a fact, handed across to us, even though we do not have any evidence except the experience and faith of our early companions in the Christian Community. It was only right that the body which bore Christ be taken into heaven incorrupt by the world. Mary was asked to hear, trust, travel, and live fully what she heard, or believed she heard. Maybe the angel wasn’t real and she just imagined that, or wished it were true. Reality did set in and within her womb and that of Elizabeth’s. Reality came forth in Bethlehem and throughout Israel in the life of Jesus and to His Death. All of us are made for heaven and asked to emulate Mary. Am I ready to bring forth Christ into the world? During the time when Jesus lived over 2,000 years ago, popular culture lived by the concept of reciprocal justice, “an eye for an eye.” Jesus taught counter-culturally and turned reciprocal justice upside down. Jesus challenged his followers during the Sermon on the Mount: "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven." The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that "An eye for an eye is a law that makes the whole world blind." There has been an overwhelming amount of tragic violence these past days and a seemingly ever growing amount of hatred expressed towards those responsible for acts of violence. When we live with hatred and unforgiveness we live with something that is worse than any punishment that could be given to the servant who was beating the other servants. Hatred and unforgiveness eats away at us from the inside. To this Jesus’ response was to ask for forgiveness because they did not know what they were doing. This brings us back to today’s reading found in Luke 12:48: “…more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” As Christians, we have been entrusted with more and more is demanded from us. The challenge I have made for myself is the next time I catch myself cursing under my breath towards someone that has irked me (like cut me off in traffic) is to reverse the curse and ask the Holy Spirit to help me pray for the person.
