“We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God!” Dear sisters and brothers, today’s gospel continues the discourse with the same seemingly paradoxical, even absurd, directives for his followers. He tells them to love their enemies and to do good to those who hate them. He asks them to bless those who curse them, to turn the other cheek to those who strike them, and to let people take what belongs to them. Be merciful and forgiving, expect nothing, and “your reward will be great” He says, “to you who hear...”. One would assume the hearing is intact for the great majority of people who were gathered, so why begin the discourse with that phrase? Perhaps Jesus is speaking to those who “get it ” whose world view had already been turned upside down. Those who were already living in the kingdom of God, the kingdom of Love, understand that Jesus is talking about receiving our identity from God, rather than from how others treat us. “Nobody is going to take advantage of me” is not an identity we receive from God. Therefore, those who live in the kingdom are willing to risk being generous, forgiving and vulnerable, as they draw from the Ultimate Abundant Source – God – the source of all generosity, forgiveness and vulnerability. They live without the protection of power, position, privilege and righteousness. “We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God!” is how the song goes. Letting our light shine brightly, without fear of being snuffed out, ushers us into the kingdom of God now, not later. Teilhard de Chardin says, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” And what an adventure it is. Find your reason for believing Christ. Dear sisters and brothers, the disciples in the gospel story today have spent the whole night “toiling and had caught nothing." As professional fishermen, they must have been very disappointed. Peter didn’t even care what Jesus was doing on the shore. Fishing in the right places at the right time, they should have seen big results from their labours; but no! Still, now they had a tale to tell afterwards, but the story had much deeper implications for them and for others. Jesus had been preaching to the crowd and, because of their great number, they crowded him further towards the waters of the Sea of Galilee. To alleviate the situation, Jesus stepped into Simon’s boat and asked him to go out a bit from the shore. There he preached to the people from the boat in the shallow waters. Afterwards, he turned to Simon, “go out into the deep water and lower the nets for a catch”. Most often we try to please ourselves, we are just not connected with our deeper true self and look our life in shallow living. Today Jesus teaches us to go out into the deep. But time and again we resist to go into deep. Simon the pro fisherman, must have resisted the request because he had just done battle with the sea and had caught nothing. But ultimately, when he obeyed Jesus, he found himself; he was overcome by the great number of fishes that their nets were bursting. Jesus promises us saying, “do not be afraid from now on you will be catching people.” Our call into service is a call to trust in Jesus’ promise, that despite my status paralleling Simon Peter’s “I am a sinful man,” we too are invited to give in to following him more closely. And the joy of Christ is ours to take. Are you happy the you are connected with Christ? Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19; 1 Corinthians 12:31--13:13; Luke 4:21-30
Dear friends in Christ Jesus, today we celebrate, “Day of prayer for children”. It is fitting that we hear today two important features in the gospel. On the one hand the town’s folk are quite impressed with Jesus’ words. They know His parents and are quite excited that Jesus will make them proud and famous perhaps. On the other hand, they begin to dislike and take offence the way Jesus tries to enlighten them of their folly. Jesus begins to move to public domain and not confined to the Israelites only. He quotes two familiar stories from their scriptures. (1 Kings 17, and 2 Kings 5, 14-9) These stories provoke His listeners and they change their opinions and feelings concerning Jesus. They do not like the implications of His interpretation of the stories and so when they, like us, do not like the message, they attempt to get rid of the messenger. Jesus escapes to continue His healing, teaching, and provoking. The folks of Nazareth were blinded by their rigidity and their seeing Jesus as limited to their own expectations. Jesus became a stumbling object, because they thought they could see Who he was, but could not because of their low-vision. Jesus provokes us to admit we have low vision about most things and especially about the God of Revelation. Faith is a way of living with the admission that God offers us little glimpses and the grace to see them and trust in what is behind and beyond them. Strange enough, it is the children who see far more clearly than adult. Allow the message to confront our localised vison and penetrate darkness our heart to see God’s kingdom and change. It is up to us folks, to accept or reject: choice is ours. Service in Action The readings prepare us for the upcoming feast of Christmas by bringing together the major themes of the first three Sundays of Advent, namely, promise, repentance, transformation and joy. They remind us that the mystery of the Incarnation comes to ordinary people living ordinary lives, who have the openness to do God’s will and the willingness to respond to God’s call. Today’s readings suggest that we should not celebrate Christmas as just an occasion for nice feelings. Instead, commemorating Jesus' birth should inspire us to carry out God's word as Mary and Jesus did, in perfect obedience to His will, and thus to become true disciples. In the first reading, the prophet Micah insists that God chooses what is humanly insignificant and unpromising to bring about His own loving purposes. Micah gives assurance to the Jews that God is faithful to His promises, and that from the unimportant village of Bethlehem He will give them the long-expected ruler. The second reading, from the Letter to the Hebrews, reminds us that it is the person of Jesus Christ, Who has offered the perfect sacrifice of obedience that liberates us from sin. The reading portrays the Son of God as accepting a human body, the true Christmas theme. By His willingness or eagerness to do God’s will, Christ offered Himself in the place of all the other ritual sacrifices offered as the means of sanctification. This reading reminds us that God, like any loving parent, wants us to do His will. In the Gospel, Luke tells us how two seemingly insignificant women met to celebrate the kindness and fidelity of God. It shows us how sensitive Mary was to the needs of Elizabeth, her older cousin, who had miraculously become pregnant in her old age. For Luke, discipleship consists in listening to God's word and then carrying it out, and Mary does both, to become the most perfect disciple. What is our disposition after participating in the series of Christmas Novena homilies and other spiritual preparations? Have we decorated well the cribs in our hearts? If we have done so abundance of blessings, joy and certainly the worthy share of the bread from Bethlehem is well assured. Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Wishing you all a Happy and Holy Christmas and safe holidays. We wish for you much joy and love, with a new year full of God’s goodness. Frs Ephrem, Gregory and Paul Christmas Novena 22 – 23rd December - St Patrick’s Church 7pm All are welcome to come join us for the final of the novena. There will be a priest available for reconciliation each night during the Novena. The wreath is made of a circle of ever green branches. Four candles stand in the circle and each one represents one of the four Sundays of advent. • 1st – The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolises Faith with the “Prophet’s Candle” reminding us that Jesus is coming. • 2nd – The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolises Faith with the “Bethlehem Candle” reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. • 3rd - The 3rd Sunday of Advent symoblises Joy with the “Shepherd’s Candle” reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. • 4th – The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolises Peace wth the “Angel’s Candle” reminding us of the message of the angels: “Peace on earth, Good Will Toward Men” to all the parishioners who have given so freely of their time and talents, this includes members of committees, counters, altar servers, all church ministries and all those attending our churches. We make up the Body of Christ and each of you is important. I wish you all Happy Holidays and the peace of Christ. Fr Ephrem If you are coming to the Mass for Children on Christmas Eve at St Patrick’s Church and you have some little people that might want to dress as angels or stars they will be most welcome to be part of our service St Patricks Carpark We are very sorry that completion and sign off for the carpark has been delayed. This is due to a situation beyond our control; but be assured that the Finance Committee has been vigilant in trying to get the work completed. A diagram of the park, with an indication of parking spaces and the system for entering and exiting is on the noticeboard at the back of the Church. Signage etc on the site will be added in January. Thank you for your patience and understanding. St. Vincent de Paul Society Seatoun & Miramar Conference says a big thank you to Holy Trinity Parish parishioners, to pupils, parents and staff of Holy Cross and St Anthony’s schools and St Patrick’s College Young Vinnies, New World Miramar and Repco Lyall Bay, and SVDP members. Your response to our appeal for groceries, treats and presents for our Christmas boxes delivered to those in most need, was overwhelming. Thanks again to New World Miramar who were extremely generous by donating vouchers for a range of groceries, toiletries and produce to place in the boxes. On Friday, 14 December 2018 the Seatoun and Miramar members and friends of St. Vincent de Paul Society put together the boxes and hampers and delivered them to over 60 households for 230 people most in need of this extra help at this time of year. Thank you to the 25 sorters, drivers and their helpers who delivered all these boxes. Each and every person was a cog in the wheel of this act of kindness in the Holy Christmas spirit to our neighbours. May God bless you for what you did. Best Christmas wishes, Once Mary has received the message of the angel and said “yes” to the call to become the Mother of the Saviour, she sets out in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was in the sixth month of her pregnancy. Mary is very young; what she was told is a great gift, but it also entails great challenges… Yet Mary does not shut herself up at home or let herself be paralyzed by fear or pride. Mary is not the type that, to be comfortable, needs a good sofa where she can feel safe and sound. She is no couch potato! If her elderly cousin needs a hand, she does not hesitate, but immediately sets off. Prepare the Way The Advent season challenges us to prepare for God’s coming to us in the future, with power and great glory on the clouds of heaven, and for His present “coming” to us in his Word, in the Eucharist, and in the abiding presence of His Holy Spirit in our souls. Our Advent readings say very little about Jesus’ birth because what we are really anticipating is the advent of our salvation which takes root in our lives as we respond to God’s grace. Our waiting for that advent will be brought to completion when Christ comes in glory. The readings today give us an invitation to recall God's saving deeds in the history of Israel, culminating in the coming of the promised Messiah. Our remembrance of God’s saving deeds during the Advent season is meant to stir our faith, to fill us with confidence so that, as today's Epistle puts it, "the One who began a good work in us will continue to complete it" until He comes again in glory. Baruch, in the first reading, reminds us that all of us, like Israel in her exile, have been led into the captivity of sin. Hence we are in need of restoration and conversion by the Word of the Holy One. In the gospel, John reminds us that we should prepare the way for the salvation of "all flesh,” including our own, by true repentance leading to the renewal of our lives. Quoting Isaiah, John declares that he has come to prepare a royal road in our hearts for our Saviour. John’s ministry was not a myth but done in the civil and religious history of the time. At that time Jews were suffering under their political and religious authorities. In this desperate situation many sincere and pious Jews were waiting for the promised reign of God. That is why John’s preaching awakens great interest in them. John did not speak so much of geographical valleys, mountains and hills or rough and crooked paths rather the valleys of broken relationship, pride and arrogance are the mountains and hills to be levelled through fair dealing, transparent, trustworthy life and rectify our broken relationship through reconciling ourselves with God and one another. Jer.33:14-16; 1Th. 3:12-4:2; Lk.21:25-28,34-36 - Liberation is at hand
The First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year, a new pilgrimage. Advent means ‘coming’ - the coming of Christ. In fact, we can speak of three different comings of Christ namely (a) historical, (b) every day of our lives through his Word, Eucharist, sacraments, persons and daily events, and (c) ‘the second coming of Christ’, when each one will receive his or her due reward. During advent, in fact, in the very first Sunday of Advent, we are invited to be prepared and ready for the coming of Jesus. We are exhorted to be always awake and vigilant for we do not know the hour and the time of the arrival of the Son of Man. The Gospel passage of today offers us a description of the end of the world not to frighten us, but to make us aware of the urgency of being ready and vigilant for the day of the Lord. St Paul suggests us certain ways and means to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord that is to enrich ourselves in our love for one another, to lead a life of holiness and to continue to make progress in the good that we do. As means of preparation, the Gospel invites us to pray because we will have the strength to escape everything that is about to happen (Lk 21:36). It encourages us to be optimistic even at the “end of the world,” because our liberation is at hand. The invisible presence of God that we experience in prayer makes us recognize our own strength. Hence, with a life of love, holiness, growth and prayer, we shall prepare ourselves to meet the Lord when he comes. The best model for our spiritual preparation during this time of waiting and active vigilance is Virgin Mary who waited for the promised Messiah with great hope. Church has given us this grace filled four weeks for our spiritual preparation to welcome the Lord in our hearts, homes and families. Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Advent Advent is a season of hope, expectancy and, particularly in the last nine days, preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord. Colour adds beauty and with floral and lighting atmosphere waits for new life. Joyful music, carols with symbols in display doubles the joy. The wreath and candles with Jesse Tree telling the story Jesus coming into this world makes the season to look forward to. I encourage you to build a crib and light a candle in every household and pray, especially from 15th – 23rd December leading up to Christmas. CARITAS GIFTS 2018 Caritas Gifts are a perfect way to show your friends and loved ones that you are thinking of them this year, while also making an important contribution on their behalf. Every single Caritas Gift purchased, also allows us to offer vital assistance and support where it is needed most. The range of Caritas Gift options are split across four specific areas; Hope Fund - supports our development work Life Fund - sustains emergency support Peace Fund - promotes healthcare, human rights and justice Learning Fund - supports education and environmental care Each one provides vital funds, supporting a variety of Caritas programmes. All are focused towards creating positive and long-lasting changes in the lives of some of the most vulnerable communities relying upon our help. For example, if you buy the gift of an Emergency kit from the Life Fund, the money you pay goes into that fund and is used to support emergency work where it is needed most. Or by purchasing a chicken or a goat gift, you will be supporting a community, helping to provide sustainable food options. When you purchase a gift from one of these funds the money you spend supports that area of Caritas' work. Even the smallest gifts make an incredible difference to those in need, whether it is $10 or $1000. Every Caritas Gift makes for a wonderful present to give family and friends while also helping to support the dignity of our brothers and sisters, both here in Aotearoa New Zealand and across the world. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent, which we begin again today, restores this horizon of hope, a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God’s Word. Dear brothers and sister, this weekend the Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King or King of the Universe as it is said. This feast of Christ our King brings us the end of the Liturgical year 2018. And next week we will begin our new liturgical year 2019. This feast was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in his encyclical letter “Quas Primas” The title of which was “Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Regis.” We Christians believe that Jesus Christ has dominion over all creatures by essence and by nature. Jesus the word of God is united (Consubstantially) with the Father, has all things common with Him, and therefore has necessarily Supreme and absolute over all things created. From this it follows that to Christ angels and men are subject. Christ is also King by acquired, as well as by natural right for He is the ‘Redeemer’ of the World. Another proof of his kingship is that “All power and authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. (Mt.28:18)
We have travelled a long way since the first Sunday of Advent 2018. Christ has been with us as the invisible companion of our faith journey leading us, guiding us, protecting us and encouraging us all. I hope and believe that during this faith journey we have grown and become matured Christians. This growth in our spiritual life will help us to rejoice as we celebrate the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly referred to as the feast of Christ the King. Huge thanks to the Society of St Vincent de Paul who supplied a van and driver and covered the costs of transporting the cakes to Kāikoura. Stretch out your hand to us, Lord, and take hold of us. Help us to love as you love. Teach us to leave behind all that is passing, to be a source of reassurance to those around us, and to give freely to all those in need. Amen Pope Francis: Homily for the Mass for the World Day of the Poor, 18 November 2018 We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died and those whose anniversaries occur around this time. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially Judy Chote, John Rogers and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my Words will not pass away.”
Jesus words will never pass away, in spite of tribulation. What does Jesus mean that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will not pass away? The Bible consistently warns us that this World will not last forever. This statement was in the context of end times’ prophecies and the eternal nature of Jesus’ words: “My words will never pass away.” This means that trusting Jesus is wiser that trusting anything in this world. We all of us know that to “pass away” is to disappear or to be no more. This refers to the physical heaven and earth- the material world and all it contains- but not the Spiritual or Souls of the inhabitants of those places. Scripture is very clear that people will outcast the current material universe, the current universe will be replaced by another that will never know the contamination of Sin. The Prophet Isaiah foretold the passing away of heaven and earth, too. “All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and heavens rolled up like the scroll; all starry hosts will fall like withered leaves from vine like shrivelled figs from the fig tree(Is 34:4) The Lord assures His people that even as the heaven and earth are passed away, His Salvation is secured: The heaven will vanished like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies, But my Salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fall. Knowing that heaven and earth will not pass away gives us perspective in life. This world in not our home, our real home is a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. Our aim therefore, should be to reach this new heaven and this new earth. Fr Gregory Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. God’s answer to the poor is always a saving act that heals wounds of body and soul, restores justice and helps to live life anew in dignity. God’s answer is also a summons to those who believe in him to do likewise, within the limits of what is humanly possible. The World Day of the Poor wishes to be a small answer that the Church throughout the world gives to the poor of every kind and in every land, lest they think that their cry has gone unheard. It may well be like a drop of water in the desert of poverty, yet it can serve as a sign of sharing with those in need, and enable them to sense the active presence of a brother or a sister. Caritas gifts can be ordered now by calling us directly on 0800 22 10 22 or by visiting the Caritas website: www.caritas.org.nz/caritas-gifts place your order by Monday, 10 December to ensure that your Caritas Gift is received in time for Christmas. We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died especially Natalie Vincent and those whose anniversaries occur around this time. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially Judy Chote, John Rogers and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. St Francis taught the world the following prayer: “It is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.” The centre of attraction for this weekend’s Gospel is the poor widow. She has shown us the wonderful example of Christian generosity. It is said that she gave everything for the love of God. Money, in one form or another, is a very popular topic with Jesus. He mentions wealth many times in his talks and in his reference to life and people’s values. While I have been touched by the generosity of the poor widow, I have grown to admire the other people who were putting large amount into the collection box. I think that as we have grown older and started to have a few dollars, we have learned a few things about money and ourselves.
When we have little or nothing, giving away everything means nothing. But when we began to accumulate something, all of a sudden, we become possessive. The nothingness becomes something very precious. Things like retirement and security starts bothering me. Now that I have become something, I should become be generous and share what I have with those who have nothing. But what is happening here is that the more I am getting, the more I want to hang on to it because I may need it for a rainy day. Having gone through the hurricanes and tornados of life and come out of them successfully, why should I ever think the Lord will not take care of me on the rainy day? It is said in the first reading that the widow who shared her nothingness with Elijah, her meal never got exhausted. Maybe it is a good time to ask ourselves a basic question: “Does our increased prosperity help the poor as much as it should?” Are we as generous as we were when we had nothing? It is in giving that we receive.
