Is. 55:6-9; Phil. 1:20c-24, 27; Mt: 1-16
Is God fair and just? How often do you hear the cry “It isn’t fair?” It is, of course, a complaint you hear many times from children and teens. Students complain their teachers aren’t fair with their exams. Some adults and parents complain that giving grades on performance isn’t fair. How often do parents tell us that teachers aren’t fair? And what about university admissions policies, are they fair or unfair? The Hurricane Katrina disaster brought forth a host of concerns about fairness. It it the repeated earth quacks, tsunami and follow-ups from other natural disasters fair? Capitalism, we are told, isn’t fair. In the name of fairness, socialism and communism were tried and found not to be fair. The Church, we are often told, isn’t fair. The way it treats women isn’t fair, we are told. The way it appoints bishops isn’t fair. The way it treats victims of abuse isn’t fair, nor is the way it deals with priests who have broken the law and grievously sinned. The way Jesus Christ rewarded Mary and ignored Martha’s complaint wasn’t, according to Martha, very fair. Life isn’t fair – bad things happen to good people. Finally, we hear the ultimate complaint – God isn’t fair! These words were on the lips of the laborers in today’s Gospel parable. God through the prophet Isaiah says “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways.” God in the parable did not wrong anyone; he just decided not to consider the merits. He gave everyone according to their needs. That's the surprise of God; that is his strange way of conceiving and practicing justice. Many of us still think what we consider to be fair is the ultimate standard, measuring God’s fairness by our standards of fairness. For us, here today, we need to once again set aside our pride and arrogance and turn to the mind and heart of God. For His ways are not our ways. For if we let God be God, He will give us everything else that we could ever want or need. In the end, it’s a good thing God is God and that He is the ultimate judge of fairness. Mother Aubert’s Anniversary of Death – Sunday 1st October When Suzanne Aubert died in 1926, her funeral was the largest ever witnessed for a New Zealand woman. Humble yet determined she had made an extraordinary impact on society, and thousands – from the upper echelons to the very poor - lined the streets of Wellington to pay their respects as her body was drawn through the city. For 66 years of her life she had brought hope and courage in our land of Aotearoa New Zealand to all especially to the needy. Today Mother Aubert continues to inspire us by her writings and example. Many of the social challenges and injustices Suzanne faced are still with us now. This anniversary prompts us therefore to ponder deeply our response to the social, health and educational needs of Māori, Pākehā and indeed all those who today call New Zealand home. Suzanne Aubert founded the Sisters of Compassion in 1883 and still today the Sisters continue her pattern of service founded on faith, love and compassion. Please pray today for the Sisters and may our nation be blessed through further vocations to the Sisters of Our Lady of Compassion. Sir. 27:30-28:7; Rom. 14: 7-9; Mt. 18:21-35
Forgiveness is liberating Jesus proposes a forgiveness which brings about wholeness, covering totality of our self. He is totally free because he is totally forgiving. He teaches us to ask God to “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us.” He wants us to see that forgiveness is liberating, and it is the most liberating for the one doing the forgiving. Forgiveness allows us to walk in the freedom of the sons and daughters of God. Merciless servant in the parable has misunderstood his master’s act of forgiveness. Jesus immediately applies the parable to his disciples, to us. His Father has forgiven us any debt we have incurred with Him by our wrongdoing, even the most evil of our sins. Today we may compare ourselves to the merciless servant described in the parable. Every time we have sinned mortally we have incurred an unpayable debt to God. Each time we have received absolution we have come out of God's courtroom as free men/women. We benefit immensely when we choose to forgive and so does everyone around us. Every aspect of our life will change for the better as we learn to forgive; whether in our family, our work life or our social life. With improved relationships when we forgive; we become a better husband or wife, we become a better student or teacher, we become a better employer or employee and we become a better parent or child. In the Gospels, a good many physical healings are preceded by the forgiveness of sins. This total healing makes the forgiver happier, healthier, most agreeable, more serene and empathetic, more spiritual and religious, and capable of establishing good relationship etc. which is liberating and so refreshing. Jesus practiced what he taught. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” (Lk. 23:34). As his disciples, we are invited to do the same. By embracing forgiveness, we can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy which can lead us down the path of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Father Des Moosman, a former Parish Priest of St Patrick’s Parish, passed away peacefully this week. Recently, Fr Des very generously gave to Holy Trinity Parish a complete set of Mass vestments (for each liturgical season) and two copes. He has also gifted to Andrew his Mass kit and chalices to take care of and to display in our archival cabinet at St Patrick’s. His request was that while the vessels may be used for special occasions, Andrew was to be responsible for them. It was a lovely gesture to his former parishioners and is much appreciated by us all. RIP Fr Des Moosman. A memorial Mass will be held at St Patrick’s Church at a later date. Details tbc Fr Ephrem and Fr Paul will be attending the Synod this weekend and Fr Matthew and Fr Boniface are coming down from Auckland to celebrate Mass for us. We thank them. St Vincent de Paul Memorial Mass, 7pm, Thurs 21 September 2017, Holy Trinity Parish. Parishioners in St Anthony's, Holy Cross and St Patrick's Church communities are warmly welcomed to join your St Vincent de Paul Society members from the Wellington Area and our colleges for the annual memorial Mass at 7pm, Thursday 21 September 2017, in St Anthony's Church, Seatoun. The Mass celebrates our patron saint and prays for all Vincentians, our clients, and our supporters. Supper after. Urgent: A big set of keys has gone missing during the 10am Mass at St Patrick’s last Sunday 10th September. Leather key ring with the words WETA on it. These are very important so if you or your child saw them or picked them up please get in touch with the Parish office so they can be returned to their owner asap. Thankyou! The Gateway Baptist Church in Miramar is organising a time of prayer and intercession for our nation as we go to the polls on Sat 23 Sept from 8-9am. The venue will be at the carpark (and hill) at the top of Wexford St overlooking the Peninsula, airport & Eastern Suburbs. We would love people from all our churches to come together to pray for our nation and to bless the outcome of the election. It’s not about praying for any political party, but for the whole city & nation at this time in our history. This is part of a nation-wide call to pray on Election Day, and we will be joining people from other cities and towns across the country to pray (at dawn) together for our nation. Our bishops have provided a statement which outlines principles and topics to consider when you are deciding how to vote in the upcoming election available online at www.catholic.org.nz under ‘Bishops Statement’ This week’s reflection from the Catholic Bishops’ statement on the General Election: We are deeply disturbed by the growing prison population in New Zealand. It is a national disgrace. Crime rates have in fact fallen in New Zealand. What is driving the increase in prison numbers is changes to bail law, sentencing and parole. We want our communities to be safe. We want deterrents to be positive. Pathways of care and guidance, of participation and belonging, of work and purpose are what our at-risk young need, not corridors of bars and negative mentors. Conflicts as opportunity for growth How to reach out to the people in the catholic faith who are not leading a life according to Jesus’ teaching? Jesus invites us to make the first move to speak out to the person with a very respectful way, in a calm way, without accusing him/her, without being angry or aggressive. If your brother or sister listens to you, you have own over your brother or sister. But if s/he doesn’t listen, then you have one more step to take. You call friends from the assembly, friends from the Christian community that you are living with, reputed, watchful, good persons who will understand your case. Bring it once again to the offending party brother or sister who has offended you. And let them be witnesses to this experience of you who is trying to convert your brother/sister. If doesn’t succeed go one step farther, this could be PPC or diocesan tribunal, may be still better understanding with the authorities the church. Explain once again to the person. To the one who is incorrigible, Jesus uses very strong words to treat the person as publican. At the same time, he does not condemn them. Leave them in the hands of God. Jesus himself is present amidst two or three. This does not refer to only to the praying community; it also refers to moments when our prayer becomes life. Conflict is the perfect example where our prayer and our life become a challenge. Therefore, Jesus is fully present in a moment of conflict when we are trying to resolve our conflicts through a kindness, a respect for other, and through our dialogue with others. We are challenged therefore to really dialogue. Don’t give up on our brothers and sisters. Do not give up on our faith that Jesus can make change the person through this dialogue. We are called precisely to do this practically every moment of our life because conflicts take place so often. Conflicts should not divide us. Conflicts should not make us more angry or stressed. Conflicts are opportunities where we go beyond. At the same time let us be watchful not to invite conflicts and misunderstanding in our relationship. We get to know our defects; where we get to know how difficult it is to live together. That is precisely a great challenge of being Christian in the world today. May the good Lord bless each of us especially in these moments when there are trials, difficulties and moments of conflicts in our lives. Hurdles in our life We hear about hurdle race in the sport events. So also we face many hurdles in the life’s journey. Those who run the hurdles have to do faster than anyone else and without a stumble. If the hurdler does stumble, it usually is because of some small misstep which gets him off balance when it is time to make a next jump. In today’s Gospel we have a peculiar interaction between Jesus and Peter. In the immediately preceding verses Jesus has just declared that Peter is the rock on which he will build the Church and now he calls him a Satan and accuses him trying to trip and fall. What gives? The problem is that Peter is Okay with believing that Jesus is Messiah son of the living God. But he can’t handle the thought of Jesus’s death. And so Peter’s opposition to the cross is not helpful. Indeed his concern for Jesus’s physical well-being is an obstacle and a temptation. Earlier real the Satan had tempted Jesus in the desert and that time he refused to use his miraculous powers to relieve his hunger or to impress his believers or to take a short cut to establish his Kingdom. Now Peter tempts him as to face off the cross and here Jesus steps over the trip hazard of Peter’s misplaced concern, he will go to the cross. The cross when it is embraced with love and trust that God knows what he is doing, changes us. Every one of us has to face the hurdles in this life. Some of which are harder than any ever run by an Olympian athlete. But it is the trip hazards that are bigger threat. Far more people mess up their needs by creeping on their stairs than ever do by stumbling over in the track event. The hurdles are one metre high we see them coming and so we can prepare ourselves to face them. Trip hazards catch us unprepared. One moment we are on our feet and next moment we are flat on the ground and don’t know what happened. Most strip hazards are in a way small that’s why they are so dangerous. Jesus says that the cross is the price of our salvation. What is the cross in your bear? What are the hurdles do you face? The cross when embraced with love and trust that God knows what he is doing, changes us. And through us it touches the hearts and open minds of others as well. In this way it becomes the salvific for you and those who know you.
