Warnings against jealousy and intolerance
The apostles want to reserve God's love and healing power to themselves as the sole owners.   We hear John complaining to Jesus that a stranger was driving out demons in Jesus’ name, and hence Jesus should condemn the man.   As unsuccessful exorcists, they are jealous of this stranger.  Jesus, however, reprimands his disciples for their jealousy and suspicion and invites them to broaden their vision and to recognize God's power wherever it is found. Like Moses in the first reading, Jesus challenges a rigid understanding of ministerial legitimacy. He wants the apostles to rejoice in the good that others do.  Jesus enunciates a principle for his disciples: "Anyone who is not against us is for us." God can and does use anyone to do His work. The Church has no monopoly on God's work, truth, love or power to heal and reconcile. The work of the Kingdom is not confined to the baptized, although it is certainly our special work. The lesson is especially valuable today. Intolerance has a long history in the Christian Church and Christians are still known for a spirit of intolerance.  Ask the average person on the street what they think is a Christian attitude, and they will use words like "judgmental," "narrow-minded," "dogmatic," "condemning," and "intolerant."
The road to tolerance must begin with each of us. We must be tolerant of others.  Only tolerance can overcome hatred. The church should display tolerance to a hate-filled world.  The churches are expected to present Christ to the world.  How can the church present Him when it is arrogant or intolerant?  We cannot commend the highest spiritual beauty and truth by the use of intolerant moods and bad tempers.    It is through mutual respect that we find common ground with others and discover strengths in different beliefs. Wherever we see God's work being done we should give our support and be ready to work together with such people whether they are Christians or not, believers or not.                                                                                                      Fr Paul

The annual Suzanne Aubert Celebration Sunday is a day for all Catholics to celebrate and remember the spirituality and good works of this remarkable woman and to be inspired by what she achieved and to follow in her footsteps. At the age of just 25, Suzanne Aubert arrived in New Zealand from France, to answer God’s call to serve the sick, orphaned, elderly and those whom society rejected. She established New Zealand’s first soup kitchen which still serves thousands of meals a year. She was a pioneer of New Zealand’s health and welfare system and a friend to Māori throughout her life. In the 66 years she lived here, Suzanne travelled widely, visiting more than 24 towns across the country. A special pilgrimage map can be viewed on the website (www.suzanneaubert.co.nz) which has been designed to help those interested to retrace Suzanne’s footsteps in Aotearoa. Suzanne’s wairua lives on in the work of the Sisters of Compassion. Please continue to pray that the church will soon recognize Venerable Suzanne Aubert’s intercession in a miracle which enables her to be beatified.

Christian with a humble missional discipleship
All three readings for this Sunday draw sharp, even brutal, contrast between good and bad people and how they live.  But they do have one thing in common and that is self-interest.  All humans are self-interested; it’s part of our nature, the result of being self-conscious animals. The upright man is the thorn in the flesh for godless and undergoes tests with cruelty and torture and finally meets the shameful death. The letter of James rails against jealousy and ambition and the terrible prospect that because the members of the community haven’t got what they want they are prepared to kill to get it. In spite of all this one thing is certain that God does not give up on human beings who are on the make, no matter how selfish may be.
Since Jesus’ disciples hailed from the ordinary strata of society, quite often they demonstrated their lack of incomprehensibility of what He taught them. This led Jesus instructing them patiently, making them realize that his mission involved a total commitment to the people, resulting in suffering and death.  In spite of repeated instructions, the disciples could not get rid of themselves of the idea that Jesus was going to be a triumphant Messiah and they themselves will be granted a share of that triumph.  Jesus taught them the very essence of discipleship namely to serve the powerless, the needy and the marginalized who are in the peripheries of the society. Jesus used a child as symbol of need and helplessness and asks us to receive and welcome such in his name.  Jesus taught his disciples on servant leadership and not to compare themselves superior to one another. This message certainly challenges us to address the problem of the powerless and the needy and thus to continue the mission of Jesus.  Today Jesus invites us to the missional discipleship to bring total healing to the broken humanity. Let us offer him a mighty share of our helping hand.

Who is Jesus for you/me?
Jesus’ question about who people think he is, initially sounds very familiar.  After all, we shape our identity and measure ourselves in response to people’s comments and ideas about us.  The presence of the other, the one or ones who are different, helps me to discover who I am.  But it can go badly wrong.  Look at modern celebrities and sporting champions.  They can become hypersensitive to what people and the media are thinking and saying about them.  In a way they have to be because their careers and their money depend on it.  The sad thing is that they often end up conforming so much to public and media expectations that they really have no identity of their own or they develop a completely distorted idea of their identity.
Today’s Gospel story is about affirmation, identity and purpose of Jesus’ mission.  Jesus’ nature is now gradually revealed to the disciples.  In response to Jesus’ question, the disciples list a whole series of labels that people have applied to Jesus.  These names reveal the different expectations held about him.  Some thought of him as Elijah, some saw him more like Jeremiah.  They were trying to label Jesus based on their partial and limited experiences. Each one of us may have different idea about Jesus such as Living Bread, hidden Treasure, Great Teacher, to the sinner He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world etc.  But to the Christian, He is the Son of the Living God, the Savior, the Redeemer and Lord! In our lives too, we label people based on biased opinions and isolated incidents which they may be far from the truth.  Before you ask let your words pass through three gates.  Is it true?  Is it necessary?  Is it kind?  The second reading calls our attention to the fact that faith without deed is dead.  Love ought to show itself more in deed than in words.  We must proclaim Jesus and witness to him not so much through our preaching but more through our loving action.                                    Fr Paul

Voice of the voiceless
The central theme of today’s readings is an invitation to become humble instruments of healing in Jesus’ hands by giving voice to the needy and the marginalized in our society.   Today’s Scripture also invites us to open our ears to hear the word of God and to loosen our tongues to convey the good news of God’s love and salvation to others.   The first reading (Is 35:4-7) reminds us that God's eyes are constantly focused on the helpless.   God especially cares for "the frightened, the blind, the deaf, the lame, the mute," and encourages the powerless to "be strong and fearless."   This is why, in today’s second reading (James 2:1-5), the apostle warns the faithful about discriminating against the poor and showing special consideration to the rich.   Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus, by healing a deaf and mute man, fulfils Isaiah’s Messianic prophecy, "the eyes of the blind shall be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped". The ailments listed by Isaiah are symbolic of interior sufferings:   blindness to the needs of neighbour, unwillingness to hear God’s voice and the inability to speak words of praise and gratitude. Through this miracle story, Mark also reminds us that no one can be a follower of the Lord without reaching out to the helpless (“preferential option for the poor”).  This is pressing invitation of the Social Justice week to extend our healing and compassionate hand to reach the needy.
God has given us sound ears to hear his word and the cry of the poor.  God has loosened our tongues so that we may profess our faith in Jesus and become the voice of the voiceless and defend their cause. The miracle has great relevance to us, because a person could have perfect hearing, and yet not hear the word of God, have perfect speech, and yet be unable to make an act of faith or speak on behalf of the voiceless.                                                                                                                          Fr Paul

The main theme of today's readings is that true religion is not in scrupulously performing certain rituals and participating in stereotyped prayers, but in loving God, recognizing His presence in our neighbours and offering them loving service.  The first reading is an attempt to reinterpret the spirit of the ancient legal traditions codified by Moses and given to the Israelites to keep them together as God’s Chosen People. Moses assures the people that their God-given Law will serve two purposes: a) it will simply let the people live because the Law helps Israel survive as a people and b) it will make the people proud of their God and religion.  The observance of the Law was considered as a sign of commitment and obedience to God, enabling them to lead lives better than their 'pagan' neighbours.  In the second reading, James reminds us that keeping the Word of God is not just keeping the letter of the law.  Rather, it is to glorify God by caring for those who are unable the care for themselves. The letter captures the spirit of traditional Jewish piety, in which love of God is to be translated into deeds of loving kindness toward the vulnerable members of the community. In today’s Gospel our attention is drawn to a debate between Jesus and the Pharisees on the subject of "Tradition." Jesus blames the scribes and the Pharisees for giving undue importance to the external observances in the name of tradition, ignoring the real spirit. He also criticizes Pharisaic observance and clarifies that it is our inner motivations and dispositions that reflect our purity or impurity.
Let us observe the Word in spirit as psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”. (Ps. 119:105). Let us give priority to interior cleansing of thoughts, intentions and attitudes rather than exterior cleansing of our bodies.

We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently and those whose anniversaries occur around this time including  Barbara Ah Mu, Nola Foley and Thomas Tervoot.  Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially John Rogers and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community.
