The choice of words gives us a clear insight into the nature of faith. The people of his hometown did not believe in the deeper powers of Jesus. They took him only at face value. To them, he was yet another young man who had grown up in the vicinity. Because of their lack of faith, Jesus could work no miracle among his people.
Healing miracles generally require two things: Something from the giver and something from the receiver. What must come from the recipient is a deep belief in the giver. If that is missing, the miracle probably will not take place. People of Nazareth were fascinated and amazed at the power of Jesus but they didn’t truly believe in him. Why they didn’t believe in him? Because he was one of them. He had come from them, they all knew him, who he was? A carpenter. The son of Mary. His brothers and sisters too were with them. They felt they knew all about him, and that he had nothing to offer them. “If we reject the messenger, we will automatically reject the message” Our problem can be similar to that of the people of Nazareth. We know the Gospel too well. As soon as the Priest starts reading the Gospel we take for granted that we know it. “What can that Priest say that I have not heard before, I have heard it all”. The truth is that each time we hear the Word of God, we can understand God’s message differently. Let us remember “If we reject the messenger, we automatically reject the message”. Perennial question we grapple is about the suffering in the world and the inevitable end, death. Death of a loved one or a close friend can unravel the best of a person. It darkens our life ahead, so much so silver lining hard to see in one’s life ahead. I was very close to my granddad. the night he died I was with him in the bed. I remember it very well, it was ascension of our Lord. He died at dawn, before sun could smile in the far east. My whole body was shaken, I felt thirsty, sweat drenched my clothes. I was in the grip of unknown fear of darkness, I couldn’t think or do anything for a moment. I was paralysed. But I had courage to trekked slowly towards Church to attend Mass, and I did. Our belief tells us, there is something more than eyes and mind meet, beyond this earthly fact of life. This invariably, whether we like it or not leads us to the person of Jesus. It is he who has the power to raise us up when we are powerless and grope in the darkest hour of our life. He is waiting just there for us to come to him and he will do the rest. Just as he did to Jairus’s daughter, to the woman suffering from bleeding. This invites us to renew our faith in the power of Jesus to be healed and receive life. Students at Holy Cross have greatly benefited from the estate of Richard Horsham this year with a new music room and music lessons now available for Year 7/8 students. We look forward to some Holy Cross students also being baptised at this special end of term mass.
