Dear brothers and sisters this Sunday, we do not have the homily by the priest, Instead, we have “Lectio Divina”. Lectio Divina is a Latin term meaning reading with God or Holy Reading as it is said in today’s guidelines. It is one of the best ways of praying using the Scripture, which if practiced on a regular basis, gently leads us into a deep relationship with Christ as we open ourselves to him. It is the ultimate “Do it yourself” Spiritual project. In our Lectio Divina we will hear today a Gospel passage from Mt:22:34-40. The theme of the Passage is; “What is the greatest commandment?”
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your heart and with all you mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment.” How do we prove our love for God and our neighbours? The only way we can show we love to God with all our soul, with all our hearts and with all our mind is by loving our neighbour as ourselves. Loving one’s neighbour, means being able to forget our will for the good of another. It means offering of self for another and generously sacrificing for others. To love God above all and our neighbour as ourselves, we need to measure up to the love Jesus himself witnessed to all. Fraternal charity without limits is what God expects from us “There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”(Jn15:13) To love sincerely our neighbour is a challenge that each one of us must face if we proclaim that we love God more than anything else in this world. To do this we have to see every one of us our brothers and sisters in the likeness of God, no matter how sinful they have become. We must bear in mind that “one who has no love for a brother cannot love God he has not seen. God’s command is this: whoever loves God must also love his brother (1Jn4:20-21) Loving is not only in our thoughts and desires. We should show them in both our words and deeds. Lord Jesus, your love surpasses all. Flood my heart with your love and increase my faith and hope in your promises. Help me to give myself in generous service to others as you have so generously given yourself for me. Fr Gregory Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Please pray for our children as they prepare for First Holy Communion. First Holy Communion dates in our Parish– Holy Cross 5th November 9am St Anthony’s 12th November 10.30am & St Patrick’s 19th November 10am Holy Cross Happy Hour – Weds 1st November 11am in the Parish Centre. Seniors are reminded of our next happy hour. A friendly game of bingo and a shared lunch. All welcome. Annointing Mass at St Patrick’s Church will be Wednesday 8th November 11am due to soleminity of All Saints on the 1st November Dear Parishioners of Holy Trinity Diocesan rules allow for our priest to say a maximum of three masses each on a Sunday (see Canon 905 §2) Sunday includes the vigil mass on Saturday night. Though we currently have 3 priests, we are required to arrange Masses for two priests. From early December, the current Mass timetable must be changed, and our Sunday morning mass schedule must allow at least 30 minutes travel time for our Priest to attend the liturgies. The parish liturgy committee and pastoral council have worked hard for a solution based on the following 2 principles: 1. That the mass time changes will cause the least disruption over the entire Parish 2. That the communities most affected by proposals will be consulted and views taken into account. We are proposing the following two changes from Sunday 3rd December: · The Strathmore Hall mass at 8.30am discontinue. This proposal will not change plans for monthly masses by the Samoan chaplaincy and their social gatherings · The St Anthony’s Sunday Mass change from 10.30am to 8.30am All other Sunday masses times remain unchanged at Holy Cross and St Patricks. The St Anthony and Strathmore communities are currently being consulted and we encourage you to provide feedback and suggestions. The change reflects one-time change (for St Anthony’s) in the Parish and one location change for the Strathmore community. Can I stress two points: 1. the changes are required by December. 2. We are one Parish. The pastoral council would encourage your support and worship at any church in the Parish at a time that may suit you. Please provide Va’a or Andrew feedback on this proposal. Most of the time we have seen Jesus, as it were, on the attack. He had spoken three parables like the parables of the two sons (Mt 21:28-32), the parable of the tenants in the Vineyard(Mt21:33-46) and the parable of the wedding feast(Lk14:15-24) in all these parables he plainly accused the orthodox Jewish leaders. But here in this gospel passage we see the Jewish leaders launching their counter attack and they do so by directing at Jesus carefully formulated question. The question was: It is or it is not lawful to pay tribute to Rome? Paying any types of taxes was never appreciated among the Jews. No one was comfortable in paying the taxes, especially any kind of religious taxes.
There were three regular taxes which the Roman Government exacted from the Jewish people. There was a ground tax, then there was an income tax and there was also a poll tax. The tax in question here is the poll. This tax had to be paid by every male person from the age of fourteen to the age of sixty five, and every female person from the age of twelve to sixty five. These are the question which the Pharisees asked set Jesus a very real dilemma. But Jesus as a divine son was very wise and clever. He asked to see a coin which was stamped with the Emperor’s head. Jesus asked whose image was on the Coin. It is Caesar’s, they said And He said give to Caesar. What belongs to Caesar. But more importantly, Jesus reminded his audience that they are also God’s people. We are made in the image and likeness of God.(Gen 1:27) So he said give to god what belongs to God. Ball was in their court now. Every Christian has a double citizenship. They are a citizen of a country in which they happen to live. Therefore they are bound to pay the taxes. They are also a citizen of heaven and therefore they are bound to obey God. How sincere and honest we are when the question of priority of obeying God comes? Fr Gregory Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Last year at the end of the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wrote a document for the Universal Church called Misericordia et Misera. In it he wrote: “It would be beneficial if every Christian community, on one Sunday of the liturgical year, could renew its efforts to make Sacred Scriptures better known and more widely diffused.” Over the weekend Masses of the 28 and 29 October, each parish has been asked to read the Gospel using Lectio Divina. This practice helps us to read, meditate and live the Word of God. There are four phases: 1. Reading of God’s word; 2. Meditating on what we have heard; 3. Prayer which is when we enter in dialogue with God; 4. Contemplation where we get ready to listen to God’s voice, who speaks within us. Finally, we think about a concrete action arising from the scripture. You may like to sit with a scripture passage at home and follow these phases in preparation for experiencing this at the Mass. Please feel free to bring along a Bible in your own language on this weekend. Christianity is a reality that can be felt by every individual who avails oneself to the powerful presence of God in the world, particularly in the Church. In fact, it is only through the actual presence of God that one is expected to bring out the desired fruits of true Christian life. Without God experience it is impossible to produce fruits in our lives. God’s presence and our cooperation with Him will produce the fruits which our Gospel is talking about today.
The risk for the Christians today is that we see the parables something a past thing because it so clearly refers to Jews and Christian of the first century. We forget that it is not only in the past, but today also it is equally relevant for us. The word of god is the same. It never changes. But it influences and helps us to change ourselves according to the will of God. And these changes we call the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The master wants to see these fruits more and more in our lives. Our God is a God who trusts in us. He provides us with opportunities and resources and trusts that we will make the most of these. So let us think and meditate this week in what way we can produce good fruits that pleases our God who trusts so much in us. Have a fruitful week end. Our prayers are also with those who are unwell especially Graeme Adams and Steve Kuzmicich and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. Today’s liturgy talks about the freedom we have to say Yes or NO to God. But it also talks about the possibility of change. Through our sinfulness our initial Yes could become a NO. Through God’s grace an initial NO could become a Yes. For example we can examine the lives of Sts Francis of Assisi and Augustine of Hippo. Both of them had said no to God in their initial stage of life. They lived a life very unpleasant to God and men. Nonetheless, later on they were converted and changed their way of life and became very exemplary people and great Saints in the Church. The teaching of Jesus indicates towards the Jewish leaders who said they would obey God and then did not. The tax gatherers and the harlots are those who said that they would go their own way and then they went God’s way. They ideal sons and daughters would be the ones who accept the father’s orders with obedience and respect and who unquestioningly and fully carry them out. But there are truths in this parable which go far beyond the situation in which it was spoken. It tells us that there are two very common classes of people in the world, the saints and the sinners. We have all of us met these people. We could be one of them too. Sometimes we are seen as saying ‘Yes’ to God and Other times ‘No’. Here we learn that the Christian way is in performance and not promise and that the mark of a Christian is obedience graciously and courteously given. In this week let examine ourselves in which class do we belong to? Fr Gregory
Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Mother Aubert’s Anniversary of Death – Sunday 1st October When Suzanne Aubert died in 1926, her funeral was the largest ever witnessed for a New Zealand woman. Humble yet determined she had made an extraordinary impact on society, and thousands – from the upper echelons to the very poor - lined the streets of Wellington to pay their respects as her body was drawn through the city. For 66 years of her life she had brought hope and courage in our land of Aotearoa New Zealand to all especially to the needy. Today Mother Aubert continues to inspire us by her writings and example. Many of the social challenges and injustices Suzanne faced are still with us now. This anniversary prompts us therefore to ponder deeply our response to the social, health and educational needs of Māori, Pākehā and indeed all those who today call New Zealand home. Suzanne Aubert founded the Sisters of Compassion in 1883 and still today the Sisters continue her pattern of service founded on faith, love and compassion. Please pray today for the Sisters and may our nation be blessed through further vocations to the Sisters of Our Lady of Compassion. Please join us Do you want to hear something really magic? Sometimes we may wonder how great it would be if the scriptures came to life today and a miracle really happens. That would make us sit up! Well it did. On Thursday 21 there was some concern that with the absence of our president Brendan it would all fall to bits and we would not have enough supper and so on. You remember the loaves and fishes? Well it did happen. At the gathering and after I saw the face of Jesus; even though he did look like an old man, Then the table for supper! Talk about an overload. I was able to take a plate of the leftovers to health benificiaries for morning tea the next day and at lunchtime on Friday there were many boys at St Pats who could be seen sharing some of the left-over. That’s what I call real communion. Thanks to everyone: the clergy, the choir, the reader who stood in at short notice, the servers , the mystery cooks who seemed to make the miracle happen and all those attended from all over the Wellington area.
