We profess explicitly this Trinitarian God in our Gloria and Creed, God the Father the Creator, God the Son the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit the Sanctifier. The Trinity is so important that we commence every sacramental activity invoking the name of Triune God and conclude the with the same name.
The first reading tells us that God is deeply involved in the world from its beginning, showing Father-like care for His people, setting an example that summons us to imitation. Moses gives the people all the reasons to be proud of how they're different from their pagan neighbors. He asserts, "We have a better God who gave us a better law and we're a better people. There's no other god like ours, nor law like ours, and no other people like us, so shape up!" In the second reading, Paul describes the role of the Holy Spirit in making us true children of God the Father and brothers and sisters of God the Son, Jesus. As a response to some who insisted that pagan converts to Christ had to practice the Jewish law, Saint Paul tries to get his audience to let themselves be saved by the grace of God, instead of trying to save themselves by their own efforts, obeying Mosaic laws. He advises them to lead life in the Spirit which is letting God take over. This reading addresses some of the relations between Spirit, Father and Son, as we experience our relationship with God. Today’s Gospel describes Jesus’ final apparition to his apostles just before his ascension into heaven, commissioning them to make disciples of all nations. He instructs them that they should baptize those who believe in the name of each person of the Holy Trinity, namely, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Triune God becomes our model of relationship. Just as God is God only in a Trinitarian relationship, so we can be fully human only in a relationship of three partners, namely, each one of us, God, neighbours. The solemn feast of Holy Trinity invites us to lead a life of peaceful co-existence, mutual respect, love, understanding and co-operation. The more we live these Trinitarian values in our life the better we reflect the image and sharers of Trinitarian family. Pentecost: Holy Spirit Gift to the Church For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church.” Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. The Church age began at Pentecost and will conclude when Christ comes back for His own. This day became especially significant for Christians because, on Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon his first followers, thus empowering them for their mission and gathering them together as a Church. This day what the Prophet Joel prophesized was fulfilled, God promised to pour out his Spirit on all flesh, empowering diverse people to exercise divine power (Acts 2:16-21; Joel 2:28-32). What happened on the first Pentecost continues to happen to Christians throughout the world today, though usually not in such a dramatic fashion. The presence and power of the Spirit of God still helps Christians to confess Jesus the Lord, empowers them to serve God, bind them together as body of Christ, helps them to pray, guides them and helps them to be like Christ. Holy Spirit is the gift given to the members of the Church to build up the body of Christ, through prayer, preaching, reconciliation, and other spiritual and corporal acts of mercy. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered believers in Jesus to praise God in many languages that they had not learned in the ordinary manner (Acts 2:5-13). Symbolically, this miracle reinforces the multilingual, multicultural, multiracial mission of the church. Thus, Pentecost is an inclusive and it teaches us how to get along with others with their cultural and language diversity. Pentecost invites us to consider our own participation in the fellowship, worship, and mission of the church. Pentecost is a time to ask God to fill us afresh with the Spirit so that we might join in the ministry of Christ with gusto. And it is a time to renew our commitment to fulfilling our crucial role in the ministry of God’s people in the world. The Ascension of the Lord The Ascension, for the disciples, was one of these moments of clarity and vision. They saw something that they had never seen before. And they were all amazed when Jesus had been raised from the dead, because no human had done that before. The readings today describe a wondrous event witnessed by the Apostles. By His own power, the Lord is taken to Heaven. In so doing, He opens the gates of paradise swing open again. With the ascension our Lord’s time of earthly labor ended. He suffered much, and was greatly glorified. We shall also participate in the glory of the Ascended Lord, if only we follow the way of the cross, the way of purification, self-denial, the way of exterior and interior sufferings. Christ's work of redemption was accomplished principally by his Passion, death, Resurrection, and Glorious Ascension into Heaven. The Fruitfulness of the Ascension – Jesus does not return to Heaven to abandon us. He is more present to us than we are to ourselves. He is with us always to the end of the age (cf Matt 28:20), today in Eucharist. By ascending to heaven Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as our teacher and guide who makes each of us his dwelling place. Jesus by ascending to heaven will draw all people to himself and make his disciples his co-workers in the harvest. Jesus by ascending to heaven will always make an intercession for all of us (Heb.7:25) and grant special power of prayer in his name (Jn 14:12). Jesus by ascending to heaven prepares a place for us. (Jn. 14:2ff). The clear message from the ascending Lord is the imperative “go” with a mission to proclaim the Gospel, casting the demonic forces, healing the sick by laying the hands. Today too this imperative “go, you are sent” resounds and sends us to the peripheries of the society and our own peripheries to be instruments of good news and bring healing to the broken world. Pope Francis: Gaudete et Exsultate #108, 2018 WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 13 – 20 MAY 2018 Dear Friends As we gather in our parish each weekend for Mass other Christians are gathering in churches in our area for their Sunday worhsip. They are our neighbours, friends, people awe meet in the supermarket, perhaps even our relatives. We gather separately because of events that happened centuries ago. We have moved on from wars among Christians, hostility and bitternes, to respecting one another and being able to honestly acknowledge the many things we have in common – at the heart of which is our shared belief in Jesus Chirst. We have also found many practical ways to work together for the common good of our community. The feast of the Ascension this weekend makrs the beginning of the annyal Week of Prayer fo Chirstian Unity, which extends until Penecost Sunday next weekend. It is a time to reflect upon how we each might do some small thing for Chirstian Unity, prayer, reaching out to comeone from another Christian church, contributing to foodbanks supported jointly by churches, taking part in an ecumencal service. Nothing is too small in the work of promoting Christian unity. We are restoring that fractured unity piece by piece, and each of us has one or more of the pieces to put in place. God’s unconditional love Remaining in Jesus’ love becomes unconditional only by keeping his commandments. This becomes the source of mutual indwelling between Jesus and us. No doubt Jesus has been restless until he revealed and shared Trinitarian love with his disciples. That is the completion of his joy. The emphasis is love. Love begins with the Father and flows through the Son to the disciples. The characteristics and actions of this love are multiple. It prunes, cleanses, moulds, forms, challenges, and supports. Love commandment surely existed in Deut. 6:5 as loving God above everything. But Jesus offers us his own model, as loving one another as he loved his disciple and us unconditionally at the level of the Cross, even laying down his life for the sake of friendship. Our friendship with Jesus is confirmed and proved by living his commandments. No other gods except Jesus the Son of God called his disciples his friends and still calls us his followers friends. Ability to love selflessly has to be acquired from Jesus who is the source of all love. For this, we have first to share his thinking, feeling, attitude and sentiment. Like disciple we are also called to be his chosen friends sent to bear lasting fruits in abundance. As long as we abide in his love and ask, seek and knock, definitely God will fulfil our heart’s desire. God’s unconditional love is revealed impartially as confirmed by Peter in the first reading and to experience the same unconditional love of God we need the openness like Cornelius in whose household Holy Spirit is given lavishly. When pagan Cornelius along with his household becomes so worthy to enjoy God’s unconditional love lavishly, don’t we, the baptized ones deserve all the more? This unconditional love when practiced in daily life is the true yardstick that helps others recognize us as true followers of Risen Christ. Let’s dare to love, live love unconditionally, gazing upon Jesus as our model and friend. From this parish grew the parishes of Holy Cross Miramar and then St Anthony’s Seatoun. It is a hugely significant milestone for this parish/church community to reach serving the catholic community for 100 years. We need to celebrate this important occasion and your parish pastoral council is asking parishioners for their thoughts on how we can best celebrate this centennial. A celebratory Mass followed by some socialising would seem to be a start but your comments and ideas would be most welcome. A small group is needed to coordinate this significant event so if you have some Ideas or can help with this event in any way, please email/contact the parish office. Email: [email protected] or Ph. 04 383 7769 If I encounter a person sleeping outdoors on a cold night, I can view him or her as an annoyance, an idler, an obstacle in my path, a troubling sight, a problem for politicians to sort out, or even a piece of refuse cluttering a public space. Or I can respond with faith and charity, and see in this person a human being with a dignity identical to my own, a creature infinitely loved by the Father, an image of God, a brother or sister redeemed by Jesus Christ. That is what it is to be a Christian! Pope Francis: Gaudete et Exsultate #98, 2018 We pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently especially Timothy (Ted) O’Donovan, Audrey Wearne and June Avery and those whose anniversaries occur around this time.
