6:1,4-7; 1Tim 6:11-16; Lk. 16: 19-31
The main theme of this Sunday is the warning that selfish and extravagant use of God’s blessings like wealth without sharing with the poor and the needy is a serious offence deserving eternal punishment. Today’s readings stress the truth that wealth without active mercy for the poor is great wickedness. Amos in the first reading issues a powerful warning to those who seek wealth at the expense of the poor and who spend their time and their money on themselves. If they have enjoyed being "first" in the enjoyment of luxury, they will also be "first" in exile! In the second reading, Paul admonishes us to "pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience and gentleness" – noble goals in an age of disillusionment – rather than riches. In today’s Gospel Jesus warns us pointing to the destiny of the rich man who neglected his duty to show mercy to poor Lazarus. The rich man's punishment was not for having riches, but for neglecting the Scriptures and what they teach. The rich man was not condemned for being rich but because he was not afraid of God whom he excluded from his life, and he selfishly refused to share his material resources with the poor dying in front of his door. The poor too will not be saved just because he is poor but because he opens himself to God and hopes in His salvation that renders justice to the oppressed. The parable warns the dangers of riches which easily tends to forget God, makes the person turn deaf ears and closes himself from the needy neighbor. Daily we encounter Lazarus with different identity- as persons sad, without job, sick, old abandoned, alcohol and drug addicted, marginalized and all those in periphery towards whom we need the sense of sensitivity. Neglecting them is nothing but our sins of omission that we accept at the beginning of the Holy Mass. It is each one’s choice to side with the rich man without name or poor Lazarus who totally depended on God’s mercy. Amos 8:4-7; 1Tim. 2:1-8; Lk. 16:1-13
All three selections for today’s liturgy pertain to the subject of faithful stewardship. Condemning the crooked business practices of the eighth century (BC) Jewish merchants of Judea, the prophet Amos in the first reading reminds the Israelites to be faithful to their Covenant with Yahweh by practicing justice and mercy as God’s faithful stewards; he warns us against making money by any means as the goal of our life. In the second reading the author of I Timothy instructs the first century Judeo-Christians to become true stewards of the gospel of Jesus the only mediator by preaching the “good news” to the pagans and including them in intercessory prayers. Today’s gospel challenges us to use our blessings -- time, talents, health and wealth -- wisely and shrewdly so that they will count for our good in eternity. We are on the right road only if we use our earthly wealth to attain our heavenly goal. We all of us are stewards in the church in various degrees according to one’s status with certain amount of responsibility and accountability. As we are going through consultation process on property and Church issues, we have an ample opportunity to be fair and practical in offering our viable suggestions that will ultimately help us to be praying and missionary disciples. The parable of today is not about money. It is about roots, the roots of our hearts. Where do they reach? What nourishes them best? Are our roots linked to earthly treasure? Or are roots connecting us to God our Creator? Saint Paul tells us that the love of money is the root of all evil (1Tim 6:10). The amount we possess is not the issue. Our character is the issue. Our commitment is the issue. Our Faithfulness is the issue. Our love for Heaven is the issue. Hence, let us ask ourselves: will the possessions, friends and resources that we have gained here on earth lead us to God and his kingdom? May God help us to remain focused on Him! Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Ex. 32:7-11, 13-14; 1Tim. 1:12-17; Lk. 15:1-32
The central theme of today’s readings is that we believe in a loving, patient, merciful, and forgiving God especially the lost ones. He is always in search for His lost and straying children as Jesus explains using three parables in today’s gospel. Our God has always been a God of mercy and patience, a God who seeks out the lost as shown in the experience of Israel in the desert (the first reading) and through the amazing mercy shown to Paul the former persecutor of the Church (the second reading). Today’s gospel is the parable of the lost and found, illustrated through the story of the lost sheep, the story of the lost coin and the story of the lost son. These parables remind us that we have a God who welcomes sinners and forgives their sins when they return to him with genuine contrition and resolution. The word ‘lost’ can be understood differently. When you shed a few grams or kilos or litres of fat, you joyfully proclaim that you have lost weight. Sometimes people say that they have lost track of something. They may say they have lost heart, when they give up hope. And yes, today youngsters love to say someone has ‘lost it’ which connotes someone is losing one’s mind or going crazy. God’s lost and found department works round the clock. How do we find God and how does God find us? We find God in our reading of scripture, in our prayer as individuals and as a community, in our relationships where love and forgiveness abides in the home and in the community, and in the service, we render to the Church and society. We can also lose God when we replace him with other priorities, when we fail to make time for prayer and worship, when we ignore Him in the needy and the less fortunate of society and when we try to find him in the conveniences of the material world. Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Pope Francis: First General Audience, March 2013 Each Christian man and woman, every member of the human family, can act as a thin yet unique and indispensable thread in weaving a network of life that embraces everyone. May we feel challenged to assume, with prayer and commitment, our responsibility for the care of creation. May God, “the lover of life”, grant us the courage to do good without waiting for someone else to begin, or until it is too late. Pope Francis: Message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, 1 September 2019 Our prayers are with those who are unwell especially John Rogers, John Cairns-Cowan and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. The cost and nature of Christian discipleship Today’s readings challenge us to total commitment to the will of God, putting God first in our lives. Today’s Gospel reminds us to count the cost of being a Christian, because the cost is high. Christian discipleship requires one to "renounce" both possessions of the earth and possessions of the heart (i.e., one's relationships). In Luke's Gospel, Jesus lays out four "trip wires" for true Christian discipleship: i) renouncing the attachment to family; ii) severing the attachment to possessions; iii) accepting the hard consequences of discipleship which may involve even losing one’s life; and iv) calculating the cost involved. The first reading instructs us to ask for the gift of discernment and wisdom from the Holy Spirit in order to obey the will of God as a disciple. The second reading teaches us that detachment and renunciation are necessary for a true disciple of Christ. Once we are aware of the nature of Christian discipleship, we also become aware of the cost one needs to pay, is substantially high. The Christian discipleship necessitates a complete detachment from existing relationship, the ones that we hold dear, especially the family, so highly valued in the society of Jesus’ time. Jesus used a very strong word “hate” (love lees) preferring him above other relations which might become an obstacle to follow him intimately. One can’t fit the love of Jesus into our world as ‘another relationship’. Secondly by inviting us to carry our daily cross and go after Jesus requires complete commitment to him. Once we make our relationship to Jesus the center of our life, then all other relationships will find their proper place. Priorities in our relationships are to be set right. That is why Jesus says, “Set your hearts first on the Kingdom of God and His justice and all these things will also be given to you” (Mt. 6:33). If we truly commit ourselves to God’s cause, all the rest we need for our happiness will be given to us. It means sharing his merciful love, entering his great work of mercy for each and every person and for all people... The Christian detaches him or herself from all things and rediscovers all things in the logic of the Gospel, the logic of love and of service. Pope Francis: Angelus 8 September 2013 Our prayers are with those who are unwell especially John Rogers, John Cairns-Cowan and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. We also pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently especially Simon Watson and those whose anniversaries occur around this time including Caroline Walsh. The common theme of today’s readings is the need for true humility and the blessedness of generous sharing. Today’s Gospel warns us against all forms of pride and self-glorification. At the same time, humility is presented as a means of opening our heart, our minds and our hands to the poor, needy, disadvantaged and marginalized of society. Thus, humility is both the cause and the result of social awareness and altruism. For Jesus, the daily human needs of the poor are the personal responsibility of every authentic, humble believer. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ words concerning the seating of guests at a wedding banquet prompt us to honour those whom others ignore. If we are generous and just in our dealings with those in need, we can be confident of the Lord’s blessings. On the other hand, if we act out of pride and selfishness, we can be sure that our efforts will come to nothing.
The first reading today is from the book of Ecclesiasticus. The teaching is that humility will make a person loved, even more than giving gifts to others. Humility always places us below others so that we can serve them without resentment and with true love and appreciation. The higher position that we have in the world, the deeper is our need for humility. Such humility will be shown in having an attentive ear. Today, we would say that we need to listen to the other person. Humility is also known in the person who listens attentively to wisdom stories, to proverbs and to real life situations that help us understand others and respect them. The second reading reminds us that our destination is Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, and the city of the living God. In this city, only the humble like that of Angels and Saints can dwell there. Certainly, the proud cannot because a proud heart cannot worship the Lord. Furthermore, in this city, “everyone is a first born and a true citizen.” Hence, as citizens of this city we must clothe ourselves with humility just like Christ our Mediator. Unplanned is the true story of Abby Johnson a former Director of a Planned Parenthood abortion facility. It is a story of hope and inspiration that is touching lives wherever it is viewed. Now is a pertinent time for New Zealanders have this opportunity. To purchase a ticket got to https://fan-force.com/screenings/unplanned-penthouse-cinema-cafe/ To find other venues and times visit the Fan Force website Jesus says: “But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you”. This means choosing gratuitousness rather than self-seeking and calculating to obtain a reward, seeking interest and trying to increase your wealth. Indeed, the poor, the simple, those who ‘don’t count’, can never reciprocate an invitation to a meal. In this way Jesus shows his preference for the poor and the excluded, who are the privileged in the Kingdom of God.
