What is the goal of a Christian?
Have you asked this question to yourself? What is your answer? This emphasis on the vanity and meaninglessness of things in or first reading sounds harsh, but it really reminds us of the real truth. Our life here on earth is just temporary. We should not treat the things of this world as wonderful as they are, as if they were ends in themselves. They are not! They are means to an end, instruments to help us fulfil a much higher purpose, namely that of loving and knowing God.
Yes, it is true that we need money to live a dignified life and enjoy it, but if striving after them makes us neglect a healthy relationship with God, we will come to a tragic end. Just like the rich man in the parable. God makes this lesson clear; “take care to guard against all greed”. So if we want a truly fulfilling life, we should strive to be “rich in what matters to God”.
Let us remember what Mother Theresa once said, “God does not expect us to be successful but to be faithful”.                                                                                                                                                                          Fr Mario

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
Dear Parishioners
Nominations close Sunday 31st July for Parish Council Members. It is now nearly 14 months since the inaugural Mass for the formation of Holy Trinity parish took place and the combined members of the PPC took office. Some of these members have expressed a desire to stand down from this committee and we are seeking to recruit some replacement members.
The parish pastoral council is a team of parishioners who are focused on meeting the spiritual, liturgical, pastoral and social needs of its people and are responsible for developing the “big picture” for the parish.
Some areas of pastoral concern are: faith formation and spirituality; liturgy and worship; proclamation and outreach; social justice and charity; work with our parish catholic schools and young people; pastoral care for groups with special needs; parish operations and communications.
Every PPC member brings his or her specific gifts and it is this variety that makes for a strong team. An ideal PPC member is a person of prayer, who likes to be adequately informed before making decisions, who is willing to listen to other views with goodwill and willing to be concerned with the full mission of the parish rather than just specific issues.
Monthly meetings are of about 2 hours duration and require consistent and punctual attendance with some background work required between these meetings.
We ask for your prayerful discernment in your decision to share your skills and time with your fellow parishioners to help our parish continue the mission of Jesus Christ. If you or someone you know may be willing to offer their skills to our parish then please complete a nomination form and hand it to a priest or to the parish office.
A fully functional parish pastoral council is critical to the efficient operation of our parish and your skills could help this team achieve its objectives.   God Bless

Big thank you for Mountain of Mercy shoes and socks appeal.  Warm thanks to the compassionate parishioners of Holy Trinity Parish who kindly donated over 50 pairs of shoes and socks last Sunday 24 July 2016 to be distributed to the most needy students in our primary and secondary schools throughout the Wellington region.  Our parish generosity to those cold feet in need of warmth added to the hundreds of shoes and socks collected at the Sacred Heart Cathedral for distribution.  God bless you.

Dear sisters and brothers, how many times have we said this prayer? “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.”  It may be the first prayer we learned. Today we see where it comes from. And in a bit of irony, this formal prayer almost everyone knows seems to come from Jesus telling the disciples not to rely on formal prayers, but to pray simply, familiarly, and from the heart.
We are His family, He is our Father. We respect Him as we respect our parents. We honour His because He is holy; we call HIM “Daddy” and make him known all our needs and desires. He is there to guide and support us in all our failings and successes. He confirms His unconditional mercy and forgiveness; calling us to live in harmony, showing mercy and compassion to one another. Final balm we are asked to apply is the balm of forgiveness, the tonic of our peace and happy life. It is a challenge for us to walk this path and we can do it by the grace of God.
The prayer has become standardized and formal. We say it every day. And when we do, we should think about what it means and what we are saying. In these or other words, we are talking to our father. We are acknowledging that we love and respect him. We are asking for our basic needs, asking for his forgiveness when necessary, and promising to love and care for each other like he loves and cares for us.                                                                                                                                                      Fr Ephrem

Last Sunday, the neighbourly Samaritan exemplified the practical action of love. This Sunday, the listing Mary is an example of paying attention to the listening. I think one of the greatest sickness of modern men and women is lack of patient listening. People of this age are ready to do anything but not listening. Particularly when you speak to them about some spiritual matters. The modern mind is like a postal sorting office in the aftermath of a strike. When we sort out today's intake there is yet a massive backlog of memories, unidentified pressures, or confused plans, all clamouring for our attention.
Jesus says: yet Mary has chosen the better part. In spite of all our other things, listening is very important in our lives. Learning how to listen and how to be quiet and still dispose us for the deeper spiritual life. When Lord visits our lives, the one thing necessary in that moment is to know how to listen and receive his gifts.

Our gospel of today there is
 mentioned about "Eternal" life. What is this eternal life?
You may have different opinions but according to the Christian terminology, it is a life in the presence of God where we experience perpetual happiness. The question is how do we attain this eternal life then? The scholar of the law in the Gospel too asks the same question to Jesus. And what did Jesus say? He answers the same thing which every Christian is expected to do. Love God and love his or her neighbour. Love is the fulfilment of all the laws.
Whom do we call neighbours? Our neighbours are all those who are in need of our love and help. The ability to see the needs of the neighbour, identification of oneself with the neighbour, generosity to share what one possesses with the neighbour is called the 'love' of neighbour. Will you serve and continue to love God with all your heart, your soul, your strength and mind and your neighbour as yourself? I do not have to say "yes" at once.  I will let my day to day life write my answer clearly.

New Parish Mass times from 1 August 2016
Thank you to all who took part in the Mass survey, your engagement with this process has been vital and the Parish Council is grateful for the effort made by all. One of the major reasons to go through this process has been to ensure that there is a working Mass roster that two priests can realistically cover travelling between Seatoun, Strathmore, Miramar and Kilbirnie.

Firstly a few key points -
  • Changes to Parish Mass times within the Archdiocese must be approved by Cardinal John Dew and that approval has now been received;
  • Both the Sunday and weekday Mass timetables will come into effect from 1st August 2016. This will provide time for the various rosters to be amended and the website updated;

Dear sisters and brothers, "Are we there yet?" The journey, the pilgrimage, the desire to get there, are such a large part of human life. Roadside parks and various comfort stations along the way offer temporary relief, but the road constantly beckons the traveller.
Israel has had a long journey from prosperity through infidelity and back again. The people of Israel had been longing for the consolation of their holy home during their exile. In their own national history, they had stopped at various wayside altars in the false hope that they could worship that god and end the searching. The Book of Isaiah pictures that of a mother nursing her whimpering baby.
Jerusalem, as the city of God, is the terminus for God's people and, like a loving mother, God has been waiting to embrace all those who have kept faithful to the long road back. Acceptance, welcome, nourishment and a sense of being back home are promised and all within the experience of great joy for God and for God's children. Insecurity is the end of the journey and the beginning of God's being our securing Mother.
Jesus sends us with the promise that if we trust God's promises and care, we might not quarrel, question and quit as we make our journey to proclaim that God is mothering us towards which we move through the "here and now" that seems rather insecure at times.
Today is the time to trust Jesus and get going bringing joy and happiness in the lives of people.  You can do it. Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.                                  Fr Ephrem

Firstly a few key points -
  • Changes to Parish Mass times within the Archdiocese must be approved by Cardinal John Dew and that approval has now been received;
  • Both the Sunday and weekday Mass timetables will come into effect from 1st August 2016. This will provide time for the various rosters to be amended and the website updated;
  • The new timetable is included in this newsletter and available on the Parish web site.

For Masses at St Patrick’s Church, Kilbirnie:
The Vigil Mass remains at 5.30 pm, Sunday Mass times are now 7.30 am and 10.00 am
The Life Teen 5.30 pm Sunday Mass is still under review and will continue for the time being.

For Masses at Holy Cross Church, Miramar:
Sunday Mass times are now 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
The new Sunday 5pm Mass is to provide the opportunity within the Holy Trinity Parish boundaries for parishioners to attend an evening Mass

For Masses at St Anthony’s Church Seatoun and Good Shepherd Hall, Strathmore:
Sunday Mass at Good Shepherd remains at 8.30 am.
St Anthony's church Sunday Mass has a slight adjustment to 10.30 am

At the end of this newsletter is a copy of the new Mass times. Mass Roster Volunteer forms are available at the back of each Church.   Please return these by the 10th July   Thank you.

Acknowledging our gratitude for your generous donations: Your St Vinnies Conference in Kilbirnie thanks parishioners for their on-going generous donations in the cash box in the Church foyer.  As a result of your support, we were able to contribute to the needs of two students whose father died suddenly, leaving them facing funeral costs and life on their own. A very BIG thank you to our benefactors!
