Gen.18:20-32; Col. 2:12-14; Lk.11:1-13
Today’s readings tell us what to pray and how to pray. The main themes of today’s scripture are the power of intercessory prayer, the ideal prayer, Our Father and the necessity of persistence and perseverance in prayer with trusting faith and boldness. The first reading from the book of Genesis gives us a model of intercessory prayer provided by Abraham in his dialogue with God. Although Abraham seems to be trying to manipulate God through his skillful bargaining and humble and persistent intercession, God is actually being moved to mercy by the goodness of a few innocent souls. The responsorial psalm “Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me” is a hymn of hope and trust in the Lord, reminding us that God is close to the humble of heart and to all those who call upon Him in their need. The second reading from the Letter to the Colossians does not deal with prayer directly, but it provides a basis for all Christian prayers, especially for liturgical prayer. In the Gospel passage, after teaching a model prayer, Jesus instructs his disciples to pray to God their heavenly Father with the same boldness, daring, intimacy, conviction, persistence and perseverance as Abraham did and as the friend in need in the parable did. He gives us the assurance that God will not be irritated by our requests or unwilling to meet them with generosity. In two parables, Jesus impressed on the disciples that prayer is not to be a one-shot attempt, but continuous and persistent pleading with God for our needs of body and spirit. If we must persistently pray, it is not because God enjoys making us wait but because in persistent prayer, we get greater faith-clarity and depth in our petitions. As praying and missionary disciples how is our prayer life? Do we knock at the door of Jesus persistently who always invites all who are heavily laden with burden with the promise of rest? Gen. 18:1-10; Col. 1:24-28; Lk. 10:38-42
Today’s readings are about hospitality and the necessity of listening to God before acting. Jesus welcomed and tended to the needs of all, reflecting in his actions the very hospitality of God. All four Gospels recount Jesus’ hosting and feeding the multitudes of people who came to hear his teachings. Today’s first reading describes how Abraham and Sarah’s hospitality to strangers was rewarded by God. The Gospel passage describes how Martha, a true child of Abraham, wanted to extend the traditional generous hospitality of her people to Jesus, the true Messiah, by preparing an elaborate meal for him, while her sister Mary spent her time in talking to him and listening to him. Presenting Martha as a dynamo of action and Mary as a true listener to the word of God, today’s Gospel invites us to serve others with Martha’s diligence after recharging our spiritual batteries every day by prayer - listening to God and talking to God – as Mary did. We are able to minister truly to the needs of others only after hosting God’s words in our hearts and minds. Some people frequently question: is the time spent with God in prayer a time lost because it could have been used in service to others? Do we really need to spend time in prayer or is commitment to the service of others is enough? In this confusion, a good number believe that there is really no need to set aside a time for prayer because one’s commitment to serve others is enough. As prayerful and missionary disciples of Holy Trinity Parish these questions are very apt to ask ourselves. Good many times we too are confused whether to follow the example of listening Mary or active Martha. What is important is to strike a balance. At the same time let us keep in mind the word of God is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Ps. 119:105) Fr Paul Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. Do you see a colourful ribbon in your church? Over the last few months, and again last week, there has been publicity about survivors of sexual abuse placing colourful ribbons around and near churches. Our catholic bishops have discussed this - they would like to reiterate their support for abuse survivors to be able to place ribbons at church gates or fences as part of a valid and important way to work through their healing process. Removing the ribbons can be viewed as deeply disrespectful to survivors/victims and can be retraumatising. Our bishops ask parishes to be respectful of this process and suggest it is an important opportunity for us all to accompany survivors/victims through this journey. If anyone in our parish of the communities have any doubts about something they find around the church, we advise them first to talk to their priest. St Anthony’s Church. 30:10-14; Col. 1:15-20; Lk. 10.25-37 A Scribe asked Jesus a very basic religious question: “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” In answer to the question, Jesus directed the Scribe’s attention to the Sacred Scriptures. The scriptural answer is “love God and express it by loving your neighbour in action.” However, to the scribe the word “neighbour” meant another Scribe or Pharisee – never a Samaritan or a Gentile. Hence, the Scribe insisted on further clarification of the word “neighbour.” So, Jesus told him the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable clearly indicated that a “neighbour” is anyone who needs help. Thus, the correct approach is not to ask the question “Who is my neighbour?” but rather to ask, “Am I a good neighbour to others?” The first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy reminds us that God not only gives us His commandments in Holy Scriptures but that they are also written in our hearts so that we may obey them and inherit eternal life with God. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that just as Christ Jesus is the “visible image of the invisible God,” our neighbours are the visible image of Christ living in our midst. The final command of Jesus, the Heavenly Good Samaritan, given during the Last Supper was: “Love others as I have loved you” because the invisible God dwells in every human being. With whom do we identify ourselves when faced with similar situations? Lawyer was interested with inheriting eternal life or other characters in the Gospel such as anonymous man who was robbed, beaten and left half dead, or brigands, or priest, Levite, or Samaritan or finally to the inn keeper? Perhaps as praying and missionary disciple, we need to identify ourselves with Samaritan who was not only moved by another person’s distress but stopped, nursed and paid for all the expenses. Instead, being charitable, he took unconditional and uncalculated risk for a stranger. Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus sent his disciples out to towns and villages to prepare for his visit by giving them “travel tips” for their missionary journey. It reminds us that announcing the good news of the kingdom is not the task of only a few but is rather a task for all. Following the model of Jesus, the Church rejoices in the triumphs and accomplishments of her children down through the ages and strongly supports evangelization through the missionaries. In the first reading, Isaiah sees the city of Jerusalem as the prototype of the rejoicing church—a church who comforts her children, “as a mother comforts her baby son.” He assures his listeners that they live in the certainty of Yahweh’s promises of love, protection, prosperity and salvation. In today’s second reading, Paul clearly teaches that it was Jesus’ death on the cross which brings us salvation and not his Jewish heritage. He reminds us that every Christian is called to be a “new creature,” and the mission of each member of the Church is to bear witness to the saving power of the cross of Christ through a life of sacrificial and self-giving service. As prayerful and missionary disciples let us ask ourselves about our missionary commitment towards our parish, our family, and in our workplace. The Church by its very nature is missionary so too her every member. What are we doing for Christ’s mission and his missionaries? What do we prefer: To follow Christ? That is challenging. To be a missionary? That takes sacrifice. To be indifferent to Christ’s message? That is easy, but it leads to loss of eternal blessedness. Let us pray to Christ who has called us, to help us take the right path. Let us also pray that young men and women hear the call of the Lord of the harvest and offer generously their life to work in the vineyard of the Lord.
