What a beautiful image Jesus give us of the church! The net! Everyone knows that once the net is thrown it collects every kind of fish. Look at the net. Lok at our Holy Trinity Parish on Sunday morning. It is filled up with all kinds of “fish”. Look at the size and shape of some of the fish so huge. Look at their colours? There are white and blacks, red and yellows and blues. Each fish is so special and unique and we all belong in the net of Christ’s love. Jesus welcomes everyone in his net. What a mixture but beautiful group we are in the net. We are rich and poor, young and old. Some are highly educated, other are unlettered, married and single, priests and religious. We are everybody.
The incredible thing about the Church, this net is that everyone belongs here. I belong. We belong. This net is my home and my family. We eat and drink the same “Body and Blood” of Jesus Christ. The more is l love my brothers and sisters in the net, the more I am loved and respected. The scary thing is that at the end of the world, God will separate the good fish from the bad. The good news is that the merciful and loving God the Father who sees our hearts will judge us in perfect love and merciful justice. I think at the judgement many that were judged as “bad” will turn out to be the most beautiful fish in the net. In the meantime, let us enjoy being in the net. The church is the most beautiful and crazy place we can ever be. The Church door is never closed. This weekend we are invited to reflect upon good and evil things that exist in us and in the world. We may not agree on the origin of the evil, but we definitely can’t dispute its reality. Today we are more conscious than ever before of the evil in the world. It gets the headlines in all the papers and radio and television. Evil is absolutely real. In our daily life we see evil everywhere. Our Holy Scriptures too speak about the reality of evil. For example: the story of the Serpent in the Garden of Eden, the murder of Habil by his brother Cain.
In the Gospel of today, in the parable of the Wheat and Weeds, it is clarly affirmed the reality of evil. The question is being asked by everybody today: why God doesn’t intervene and finish off (destroy) evil. Yeah! God could do that but if he does that none of us will be alive, because the world, and indeed each of us, is a mixture of good and evil. God therefore, has given us freedom to choose between good or evil. God will judge us on the last day and then he will destroy the evil ones and save the righteous ones. But first he has given us time for repentance and change of heart. We should make use of the time and become good. But He doesn't force us. Rather he invites us. He sends his words to each one of us. And compares this word to a seed which a man goes and sows in the ground. That seed is a wonderful thing, for it has within it the capacity to grow. God plays his part beautifully well. The question is how man plays his part? How he co-operates with the grace of God? Here each man has to answer to these questions. I think some people take the word of God (seed) very seriously and produce good fruits. While others too, hear the same message but they take them very casually or they accept them for a while and then give them up and as a result they produce very little fruits. Have I no potential or capacity to produce good fruit? This lecture is part of the Keeping Faith in Politics 2017 election series. Nowadays it is sad to see that land, housing and work are ever more distant for the majority. It is strange but, if I talk about this, some say that the Pope is communist. They do not understand that love for the poor is at the centre of the Gospel. Land, housing and work, what you struggle for, are sacred rights. To make this claim is nothing unusual; it is the social teaching of the Church. Tickets are $25 and are available online at: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/raising-happy-confident-and-resilient-children-tickets-35336832417 It is the little people – those who are humble and gentle of heart, who receive the blessing of Christ. Jesus says to us: ‘learn from me for I am gentle (meek) and humble of heart’. Two words which today do not seem to make very much sense. Today the name of the game is to get on, to be successful, to make it. And to do so, you’ve got to push, to project yourself, to grab the limelight, to get to the know the people who matter. From popstars to politicians, from sports people to business executives, the goal and means to it are the same. In this world, gentleness and humility seems to be useless.
But Jesus says that if we want to get places in God’s world, we have to be gentle and bumble and as open and receptive as a child. To be gentle and humble is not weak. In fact, gentleness is a strength. When we are empty and know it, God can fill us. When we are weak and acknowledge it, God can strengthen us. But when in our pride and arrogance and self-sufficiency, we think we know it all, we are heading for disaster. Simple people are often nearer to God then clever theologians. If we learn these two virtues, Jesus promises us a great reward not in a next life only, but here and now. A man came upon a little boy carrying a still smaller boy who was lame on his back. ‘That’s a heavy burden for you to carry’, said the man. ‘That’s not a burden’, came the reply. ‘That’s my brother’. Jesus teaches us today that the Gospel will not always bring peace; it may be the cause of persecution, misunderstanding or even death. There is a price to pay for being a disciple of Jesus. When we look at the history of the Church in our own lifetime, we see almost a return to the brutality of the persecution of the early Church We have seen in our own time the horror of persecution, rape of Nuns and murders of the Bishops and Priests.
Today the followers of Jesus are often asked to give up a lot of the culture and values of the society to walk with Jesus. What is acceptable to the world is not acceptable to us. It is not easy perhaps living in a society where abortion, premarital sex, gay marriage, divorce and marital infidelity are accepted as normal and even good. While we all must take up our cross each day and follow Jesus, it does become easier when these is a community of Brothers and Sisters who are there to support, encourage and when need be challenge us. We do it with the Lord Jesus and with the Church. We don’t stand alone.
