Ex 17, 3-7; Rom 5, 1-2. 5-8; Jn 4, 5-42 We have the grace of God to reconnect ourselves to Him Dear sisters and brothers, there is silver lining under the cloud. There is always something for each one of us and never in vacuum. It is a time to let go past and let in the present. The People of Exodus still hang on to the security they had, struggle to let go and loath for crumbs instead of trusting God. One could very well put himself or herself in the story of the gospel. If we allow Jesus wants each one of us to lead us towards deeper, fuller human life. As the Samaritan woman had resistance to Jesus, so we too have resistance to growth, complacency, evasions giving way to eventual acceptance and journey with Jesus. The very thought of have water that you never have to come to draw water drew her attention more than anything else. She was with mixed feeling and understanding about the motive of Jesus, so are we. We too can be attracted to Jesus by very mixed motives, some of them matters of personal interest: belonging community, security. These are the steppingstone Jesus uses for us to build relationship with Him, a personal relationship. This personal relationship with Jesus enhances the growth in human relationship too. What is your personal journey and steppingstone for you with Jesus’ story of Samaritan woman? What have been the motives attracting you to faith, prayer, religion, Church? Pope Francis composes a prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, to implore her protection during the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic. O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. The Church’s National Centre for Religious Studies (NCRS) – part of Te Kupenga-Catholic Leadership Institute – has today announced the launch of NZpray2day on Google Play for Android devices. NCRS director Colin MacLeod says NZpray2day is designed to support young and old in Catholic schools and parishes to enter simply into the richness of the ancient Christian cycle of seasons, saints and readings. “It’s not an exhaustive source of all information in these areas,” Colin MacLeod says. “But rather, it takes ‘snapshots’ and encourages people to seek a moment to reflect, pray and respond. “It also brings in pieces of history to link this liturgical journey with aspects of the story of New Zealand and the wider world.” So far NZpray2day is only available for Android devices; simply go to Google Play Store, search for NZpray2day, and install. But it could be available for Apple devices by mid-year. “It is completely free – a gift for you from the National Centre for Religious Studies,” Colin MacLeod says. “We hope it will be an inviting and useful tool for individual, class and staff prayer in schools, and for whānau and parishioners throughout Aotearoa and abroad.” “Our simple hope is that NZpray2day helps people become more easily aware of the gentle cycle of days and months which link us to creation, the life of Jesus and the shared journey of the Church. It is a journey we walk together.” Bring your children and your grandchildren to the Mission Expo. We have lots of activities and games planned especially for them. Gen 12, 1-4; 2 Tim 1, 8-10; Matt 17, 1-9
We are on a pilgrimage Dear sisters and brothers, the years of our life are hurrying by, each seeming shorter than the last. We are pilgrims on a journey from youth to age, from the cradle to the grave. In his dream-like poem The Lotus Eaters, Alfred Tennyson describes weary resignation, as one option we might take in light of the swiftly passing years: “Let us alone. Time driveth onward fast, Portions and parcels of the dreadful past.” A heart full of faith and hope, the passing of the years can be seen in a more positive light. We have a destiny that does not end with death and burial, or cremation, if that’s what we choose for us. After this life, we trust we will emerge into a new kind life in God’s presence. On this earth we are pilgrims, like Abraham, moving toward the land of promise. Like St Paul, we try to deal with whatever problems and setbacks we meet along the way, with the help of the Lord. Finally, if we are faithful, we hope to be joined with Christ in glory, as the reward he has promised. Hearing God’s guidance and taking it fully to heart, made Abraham the great pilgrim of faith. All his days were marked by listening, with openness to divine guidance. This makes Abraham “Our Father in Faith”, showing us the way towards Yahweh, the living God. His spirit can mark our lives too. As St Augustine said so memorably: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord; and our hearts can never be at rest, until they rest in You.” Fr Ephrem Holy Trinity Parish Vision We are a prayerful and diverse Catholic community in the Eastern suburbs of Wellington, drawing strength from one another to grow and become fully alive as missionary disciples. The readings of the day show Jesus still in his mother’s arms, yet she already offers him to God as a prelude to the offering of his whole life. As law abiding people Mary and Joseph fulfil the Mosaic law of purification and presentation. By presenting Jesus in the temple he was consecrated to God and declared His property. The presentation in the temple openly proclaimed this reality hidden in Jesus. Simon, a typical product of Old Testament spirituality, waits the consolation of Israel, encounters the Messiah and prophesies about his future as light and salvation to the Gentiles and glory to the people of Israel. Mary bypasses the ceremony of purification as she was spotless from her conception. From the day of presentation, we don’t hear much about Mary in the Gospels as Jesus takes the central stage. Mary recognises fully the right of God over her child and associates herself with his consecration. This is her first direct participation in the sacrificial offering of Christ which will finally be completed on the Cross. Every one of us are consecrated through Baptism, Confirmation and other sacraments. The Church invites us to remember our consecration and maintain its sanctity and consecrated life. Today the Church also celebrates the Day of Consecrated Life. Let us therefore prayer for all religious Brothers and Sister who have consecrated their life for the Church and the world at large. Pray also for young men and women that they may respond generously to the divine call to work in the vineyard of the Lord. Dear sisters and brothers, during this Advent season, we find ourselves journeying into God and the mysteries of the incarnation. Whole the stories may seem familiar as we encounter them each year, may we draw new life from these ancient texts, which continue to bear seeds of faith and hope for us. The first reading begins with Isaiah’s prophesy of Emmanuel – God with us. Theprophesy comes to Ahaz, a king in the midst of threats of warfare all around him god offers a sign to confirm that His help is all that Ahaz needs. His faith was tested. God’s promise is the ultimate form of security – God dwelling in amidst people. “Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.” In the gospel we see the obedience of faith being modelled in Joseph. He follows the advice of the angel in dream who said to him, not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, which he did. His fear could be rooted in consciousness of his own inadequacy to play this role in salvation history. God in his goodness, wishes to be with us and sends a message to us requesting: would you be Mary and Joseph? He wants to fulfilment his mission in you and me. Joseph acted wisely in such a crisis time in obedience to God. Can we act and move with God as we must? Let us acknowledge the call of God’s obedience and unfold His plan in us. By listening and discerning – often in silence and stillness, we are given the privilege of participating in the life of God which we are called, overcoming our fears through love that grows to displace Him Will you allow God to enter into your life and make him the king of Glory at this Christmas? Fr Ephrem Hi dear friends, Wish you one and all a very Happy & Blessed Christmas and prosperous New year 2020. I come to know from my Capuchin bros, that many of you are anxious to know about my health and well- being. Thank you for your care and concern of me. Well, thanks to Almighty God first & then all of you my dear bro.& sisters I am keeping fine here. I am much better than what I was. My throat pain is still there but it is very mild. I am able to do all my work here. We are 25 of us in here in the community. And I am again made in charge of the community here. It is very tough & challenging at times to animate such big community. Due to these tensions my diabetes becomes bad. Secondly, it very cold these here. Christmas food boxes delivered. St. Vincent de Paul Society Seatoun & Miramar Conference says a big thank you to Holy Trinity Parish parishioners, to pupils, parents and staff of Holy Cross and St Anthony’s schools and St Patrick’s College, New World Miramar and Repco Lyall Bay, and Vinnies members. Your response to our appeal for groceries, treats and presents for our Christmas boxes delivered to those in most need, was overwhelming. Thanks again to New World Miramar who were extremely generous by donating vouchers for a range of groceries, toiletries and produce to place in the boxes. On Thursday, 19 December 2019 the Seatoun and Miramar members and friends of St. Vincent de Paul Society put together the boxes and hampers and on Friday, 20 December 2019, delivered them to 85 households for 338 people most in need of this extra help at this time of year. Thank you to the packers, drivers and their helpers who delivered all these boxes. Each and every person was a cog in the wheel of this act of kindness in the Holy Christmas spirit to our neighbours. Pope Francis: Angelus 6 December 2015 Our prayers are with those who are unwell especially John Rogers, John Cairns-Cowan and Graeme Adams and for the wonderful people who are caring for the everyday needs of the sick in our Community. We also pray for the members of our Parish families who have died recently especially Joe Begley and those whose anniversaries occur around this time. Advent is a time of grace. It tells us that it is not enough to believe in God: it is necessary to purify our faith every day. It is a matter of preparing ourselves to welcome not a fairy-tale character, but the God who challenges us, involves us and before whom a choice is imposed. The Child who lies in the manger has the face of our brothers and sisters most in need, of the poor who are a privileged part of this mystery; often they are the first to recognize God’s presence in our midst. The new Sunday Mass timetable is an interim measure for the year, following news that our Capuchin community is leaving us (Father Paul in March 2020 and Father Ephrem in October 2020). The new timetable was considered by the Parish Pastoral Council, Liturgy and Finance Committees and then confirmed by the Parish Pastoral Council at its December meeting and approved by Cardinal John. Many are feeling vulnerable during this time of change in the Parish as we await the Cardinal’s decision on the property proposal and as we contemplate our future without the Capuchin community. Let us trust in the Lord.
The 2020 timetable was agreed upon to ensure one priest (Father Ephrem) has a sustainable workload for the year, to support the Church communities of the Parish through the opportunity of one Sunday Mass in each local Church, and to keep St Anthony’s available on Sunday mornings for the Aulotu community activities and Masses. The Sunday worship ministries roster will be updated to support the new timetable, and we request volunteers and those who update ministry rosters to update it from February 2020. Dear sisters and brothers, last Sunday we brought our awareness of God’s imminent coming among and within us. For this, we do not need to look beyond John the Baptist who came to bear witness to Jesus. Who do you consider bear witness to you of the gospel that God loves us: - a friend, a parent, a teacher, ...? Or to whom have we borne witness? John the Baptist had the courage to be himself in the face of opposition. He was also a person who knew his own value, did not make exaggerated claims and was content with his mission. Can you recall times when you have been content to be yourself, without pretending to be more than you are? What was it like to have that freedom, even in the face of criticism from others? John was ‘the voice of one crying out in the wilderness’ – announcing confidently to those in the wilderness that they must not despair because God’s grace may come to them at any moment. Have you had the experience of being in the wilderness, feeling lost? From whom did you hear a voice that gave you hope? Have been able to give hope to other people when they were in the wilderness? “Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” -Triona Doherty. I am very aware that the process of preparing your proposals has not been easy, and that in some parishes it has been profoundly unsettling. You have had to deal with parishioners upset by the possibility of change, and I know this has taken a personal toll. You and the people have responded in your very different circumstances to Pope Francis’ call in Evangelii Gaudium (n 25): “I hope that all communities will devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are…Throughout the world, let us be permanently in a state of mission.” Between now and early February I will study and reflect upon the proposals. I may seek clarification or additional information from you during this time. My approach will be pastoral, looking at the possible effects on people of the changes being proposed. I will also look carefully at how one parish’s proposals might interact with those of neighbouring parishes, and the implications the proposals have together for the whole Archdiocese. In February and March I will consult with my advisory bodies about the proposals. These bodies are the Council of Priests, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, Te Kahu o te Rangi, and the Board of Administration. After Easter, which is in mid-April, I hope to be in a position to advise parishes of my response to the proposals, or to ask that further steps be taken, for example, discussion at regional levels in the Archdiocese. When I consider the proposals I will not be making a decision to “approve” them. My response to a proposal will be expressed as “no objection”, “further work needed” or “opposed”. It is the parish’s decision to actually proceed with a proposal if I have no objection. Once the parish decides to proceed, its decisions are subject to the Archdiocesan norms and approval processes. While the proposals were being worked on in parishes there has been a hold on property proposals being presented to or decided by the Board of Administration. This hold continues until I have made a response to all parishes and have notified you that the hold has been lifted. This hold includes property decisions which may already be in the early stages of the Board of Administration’s processes. We have not yet come through this difficult and unsettling process, but I would like everyone to now put aside differences and concerns and focus together on the great liturgical seasons and feasts of the next few months - Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. In doing this we have the opportunity to encounter Jesus and one another more deeply and be refreshed in our commitment to both community and mission. Please share this letter with the groups in your parishes which have been working on the property reviews, and with all parishioners if you wish. There will be a similar article in the December Welcom. With prayers and thanks for your work Yours sincerely John A Cardinal Dew Archbishop of Wellington Is 2, 1-5; Rom 13, 11-14; Mt 24, 37-44
“keep awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” Advent is a time of heightened awareness that invites us to see ourselves as God sees us – insofar as that is possible. Both liturgy and life are pointing us towards the future coming of Messiah. Isaiah calls us to confess our sins and hope for better days ahead. Saint Paul’s message in Roman is confident and upbeat of God’s forgiveness, leading us from darkness to light. Matthew warns us against complacency, since the end is coming sooner than we expect. Advent is a season of hope, expectancy and, particularly in the last nine days, preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord. The violet c colour, music and floral decorations are marked by a moderation that reflects this time of waiting and avoids anticipating he full joy of Christmas. Specific music, such as “Maranatha, Come Lord Jesus, O Come, O Come Emmanuel” with symbols of Jesse Tree and Candles make the messiah’s coming meaningful. Let’s look forward the coming of Emmanuel with great anticipation and joy while there is time. 2 Sam 5:1-5; Col. 1:12-20; Lk.23:35-43
When Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you a King?” his answer was in affirmative, but he added very clearly, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” As he is not like the rulers of this world, he is not like the rulers of this world, living in luxury, enjoying all pomp and wealth, taking best of everything for themselves leaving their people in poverty and misery. Whereas Jesus King of Kings lived in sharp contrast to those rulers, carrying the burden of all his subjects’ sins in the form of the Cross. The solemnity of Christ the King established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 was to give Christ Highest Title of honor who established God’s kingdom here on earth. Although emperors and kings now exist mostly in history books, we still honor Christ as the King of the Universe by enthroning him in our hearts and allowing him to take control of our lives. At the time of baptism, we have made alliance with this King and promised our loyalty him. Significantly, on the top of the Cross, Pilate put up the inscription, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. It was he who formerly condemned Jesus to death, but strangely, he was the first to recognize the kingship of Christ. The second to recognize it was the good thief who prayed to him, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom”. Jesus answered, “Today you shall be with me in paradise.” Yes, same Christ the king is calling all heavily laden with burn, come to me I will give you rest. The same Jesus the law giver gives us a new commandment, “Love one another as I have loved you.” It is the shepherd King Jesus who knows us his flock by name even ready to die to protect us. He loves his subjects and identifies himself with hungry, thirsty, naked, homeless etc. and taking care of their needs is doing service to Christ the King who having all authority in heaven earthly will reward us for our good deeds. Let us once again renew our allegiance and loyalty to Christ the King. As the Church year comes to an end, the Sunday readings reflect on the final days of the world, our own death and the final judgment. Today's theme is “The Day of the Lord” or the “second coming” of Jesus in glory as judge at the end of the world. Malachi in the first reading foretells this Day, giving the warning that the future, known to God alone, will bring healing and reward for the just who forearm themselves with words and works such as peace, justice, mercy and truth, and retribution for the “proud and all evil doers.” Although Paul expected to be alive at the return of Jesus, he cautions the Thessalonians in the second reading against the idleness with which some of them were anticipating the end and encourages them not to be weary of doing good. He suggests that the best preparation for the future is to devote the attention to present duties, to maintain a holy and wholesome balance between prayer and service and to develop enduring family ties and values. Today’s Gospel passage warns that the date of the end of the world is uncertain. Signs and portents will precede the end, and the faithful will be called upon to testify before kings and governors. The good news, however, is that those who persevere in faithfulness to the Lord will save their souls and enter God's eternal kingdom. The readings invite us to be keen observers of the signs of the times happening every day in the world. They also warn us to be alert and prepared to face any circumstance of the unknown future. Whatever Jesus told about his body and the temple was fulfilled. So also, he foretold about the persecution of his followers and is taking place in various parts of the world. Only the perseverance will secure our lives with his assurance of our final victory. Thus, the message of the day is: don't give up; God is always with us. As we near the end of the Church's liturgical year, the readings become more eschatological -- having to do with the end times. The main theme of today’s readings is the resurrected life of glory in heaven. The readings invite us to consider the true meaning of the resurrection in our lives. The first reading states the Jewish belief in martyrdom and the resurrection of the just. The intense sufferings to which good Jews were subjected brought them to the conviction that the justice of God would reward the faithful in the afterlife, and would also punish the wicked. The second reading encourages the Thessalonians who were waiting for the second coming of Christ and resurrection of the dead to trust in the fidelity of God and to open their eyes to the fact that the Lord strengthened their hearts in every good work and word. Today’s Gospel affirms the victory of God and God’s love over the power of death. Jesus speaks of God as a God of the living, who promises that the ones who will rise are God’s children. The Gospel shows us how Jesus ingeniously escaped from a doctrinal trap set for him and explained the doctrine about the resurrection of the dead supported by the Pharisees and denied by the Sadducees. Jesus also explained that heavenly life with God in glory is totally different from earthly life and that there is no marriage in heaven in the earthly sense. The basis of our Christian faith is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We express in the profession of our faith in creed. As pilgrims heading towards the beatific vision of God, we prepare ourselves equipped with the Word of God, Sacraments and other spiritual preparation. As believers the thought of death never scares. It is like running a race to win the unfading wreath prepared for us. Let the hope of resurrection inspire us to lead a good Christian life. As we are in the month of November let keep in our prayer all dear deceased ones. FACT The stained glass windows, gifted to the Parish by the Sisters of Mercy, had previously been in St Catherine’s Convent. The large window in the chapel was gifted by Mr and Mrs Famularo in memory of their 8 year old son Paul who was killed in an accident on Onepu Rd. The carved altar, the font and lectern also came from the St Catherine’s Convent. The altar and the wooden panels had been carved by Sr Mary Chanel Burton in 1916-17. Using the collected correspondence from a parish priest, an organ builder, English pipe-makers and Maxwell Fernie, the book describes in detail how a revolutionary new organ in Wellington was brought to life from a flat in Pimlico, London. The timing couldn't be better – 60 years after the Organ was completed and 20 years since Maxwell's death (and five years since the project started!).
